Love, Shyne lead strong fields at Junior Olympic Champs

INDIANAPOLIS - Record holders Bryce Love (Carolina Elite) and Armand Shyne (3m TC) will join numerous returning champions and elite youth athletes to lead the male side of competition at the 2010 National Junior Olympic Championships. The country's most prestigious youth track and field meet will be held July 27- Aug. 1 at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Sacramento City College in Sacramento, Calif.

The USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships is the largest and most visible youth athlete developmental program in the world. Many of today's Olympic stars got their start by competing in the USATF Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships.

The Championships are a national competition with entry based upon qualifying standards for each event. The Junior Olympics feature the following age divisions: Bantam (10 and under), Midget (11-12), Youth (13-14), Intermediate (15-16) and Young Men/Women (17-18). Entry for this championship is based on athlete performances at preliminary, Association, and Regional levels of the 2010 USATF Junior Olympic Program.

USA Track & Field is teaming up with YourGameNow.com and PlayON! Sports to broadcast a live webcast of the National Junior Olympics. Daily and week-long subscriptions are available at www.usatf.org/store.

At the 2009 Junior Olympic Championships, Midget Boys' sprint sensation Love broke the 200m and 400m Youth National records with spectacular times of 23.37 and 50.75. He also won the 100m in 11.79, which was just one-tenth of a second off the National record in that event. Shyne set a new Junior Olympic meet record in the Midget Boys' javelin after winning with a throw of 51.98m/170-6, easily improving on the previous record by 1.40m/4-7.

Also in the Midget division, look for Robert Dunning, the returning Midget Boys' high jump champion and pentathlon runner-up, and race walk champions Steven Berry (Northwest Florida) in the Bantam Boys division, Casey Kiefer (New Jersey Striders) in Midget Boys and Nathan Roberts (Salem TC) in the Youth Boys will all return seeking a second title as well.

Shannon Brewer (Boys and Girls Club- Jaguars) will return looking to repeat his Bantam Boys' 100m win and improve on his third-place finish in the 200m, as will Intermediate Boys' long jump champion Jarrett Samuels, who was also on the winning Track Eastern Carolina 4x100m relay team.

Twins Jeremy and Jermaine Kline will be competing in the Young Men's throwing events after strong showings in the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Championships last month. Jermaine finished third at the 2009 Junior Olympics, and although Jeremy did not compete at this meet last year, he finished 5th at USA Juniors.

This year's Championships will also feature a 3k fun run for everyone on Sunday morning. The scenic race trail will loop around the beautiful William Land Park. which is across the street from Hughes Stadium.
