MIRAMAR, Fla. - Team USA's domination of the men's and women's 4x100m relays and Curtis Mitchell's sub-20 performance in the men's 200m semi-finals highlighted day 2 at the 2010 NACAC Under-23 Track & Field Championships in Miramar, Florida.
Jeneba Tarmoh claimed her second gold of the competition when she lead off Team USA's 4x100m. Tarmoh handed the baton off to Amber Purvis while Tiffany Townsend handed off to Kenyanna Wilson who anchored the relay to victory in a meet record 43.07. Jamaica took second in 44.20.
The men's 4x100m team of Fred Rose, Brandon Byram, Maurice Mitchell and Curtis Mitchell brought home the gold medal in 38.96. Running even with Jamaica through the first pair of exchanges, Team USA moved into the lead on the Mitchell-to-Mitchell baton pass, with Curtis pulling away from Jamaica anchor Rasheed Dwyer all the way to the finish line. Jamaica finished second in 39.96.
Earlier in the night, Mitchell became just the 25th American to break 20-seconds in the 200m when he blistered the field with a time of 19.99 (+2.0mps) in the opening heat of the men's 200m semi-final. Mitchell's time decimated the previous meet record of 20.34 set by Evander Wells in 2008 and is also the eighth-fastest time in the world so far this year. Brandon Byram had the second-fastest qualifying time of the day with 20.31.
Heading into the 1,500m in the men's decathlon, Gray Horn led Nick Trubachik by 25 points. Trubachik would need to beat Horn by at least four seconds to get the win. In the final stages of the race, Horn was leading Trubachik by at least 40m, but in the final 200m, Trubachik's afterburners kicked in and he passed Horn with 50m to go. Their final times were 4:35.85 (Trubachik) and 4:37.73. Horn had held on to the lead that he had held from the beginning and claimed the gold medal with 7,510 points. Trubachik won silver with 7,497.
Team USA went 1-2 in the men's long jump with Christian Taylor winning gold with a best mark of 7.82m/25-8 and Chris Phipps just behind him in second with 7.80m/25-7.25. The U.S. also went in the women's high jump. Amber Kaufman won with a clearance of 1.86m/6-1.25 and April Sinkler finished as the runner-up with 1.81m/5-11.25.
Heather Steacy of Canada set a personal best in winning the women's hammer throw with a mark of 67.20m/220-6. Jeneva McCall also set a personal best to finish second with 64.17m/210-6 while Gwen Berry was third with 62.55m/205-2.
Donald Cabral controlled the race in the men's 3,000m steeplechase from start to finish, winning in 8:52.67. His closest competitor, Alvaro Abreu (DOM), was over 30 seconds back in 9:27.18. Stephen Finley brought home the bronze in 9:57.49.
The women's 1,500m saw Keri Bland win gold in 4:24.38. Over a second back, Canada's Jessica O'Connell took second in 4:25.78 and Ashley Verplank brought home the bronze in 4:28.75. Running in the lead pack the whole way, Ben Blankenship took home the silver medal in the men's 1,500m, crossing the line in 3:45.43. Cory Nanni was fourth in 3:47.93.
Canada's Gabriell Duclos-Lasnier won the women's pole vault with 4.20m/13-9.25. Melissa Gergel took runner-up honors with 4.10m/13-5.25 and Rachel Laurent and Canada's Arian Beaumont-Courteau tied for third at 3.90m/12-9.5. Mexico's Erandi Uribe won the women's 10,000m Race Walk in 50:12.27 with Lauren Forgues claiming silver in 51:06.38. Miranda Melville finished fourth in 53:03.30.

In the men's 800m semi-finals, Cory Primm won heat 1 in 1:50.12 and Charles Jock won heat 2 in 1:50.52. In the women's 200m semi-finals, Tiffany Townsend won heat 1 in 23.31 (+2.1mps) and Candyce McGrone won heat 2 in 23.01 (+3.5mps). Jeshua Anderson his heat in the men's 400m hurdles semi-final in 48.85 while Reggie Wyatt won heat 2 in 50.18.
At the conclusion of day 1 of the women's heptathlon, Kiani Profit is leading with 3,409 points. Profit has won every event individually thus far with marks of 14.21 (100mH), 1.69m/5-6.5 (HJ), 12.11m/39-8.75 (SP), and 24.32 (200m). Dorcas Akinniyi is currently in second with 3,264.
