MIRAMAR, Fla. - Team USA picked up 31 more medals on Sunday to bring the total to a record 74 medals as action concluded on Sunday at the 2010 NACAC Under-23 Track & Field Championships, held at Ansin Sports Complex, in Miramar, Florida.
LeJerald Betters, who recently took second in the 400m at the Diamond League meeting in Lausanne in 44.70, ran lead-off leg duty for the men's 4x400m in an unofficial 44.3 before handing off to O'Neal Wilder. It was then Wilder to Joey Hughes, who handed off to Tavaris Tae for the anchor leg. Tate blazed the track in an unofficial 44.1 to cross the finish line in a meet record 2:58.83. The previous record of 3:01.15 was set in 2002.
Team USA destroyed the competition in the women's 4x400m as Ebony Collins, Amber Purvis, Shelise Williams, and Tameka Jameson got the baton around the track in 3:29.80. Heading off the final turn, Jameson had more than a 50m lead over Jamaica, who finished as the runner-up well back in 3:38.05.
Charles Jock ran away from the pack in the men's 800m, winning by almost two seconds in 1:45.65. Bermuda's Aaron Evans was the runner-up in 1:47.79. Cory Primm, who had been sitting in second place for the first 700m, faded to fifth in 1:49.04. Canada's Jessica Smith won the women's 800m in 2:04.96 as Christine Rodgers claimed silver in 2:05.00 and Anna Layman took bronze in 2:05.39.
With 400m to go in the men's 5,000m, four athletes were in the hunt for the gold medal. When the bell rang, Mike Crouch and Diego Borrego (MEX) separated themselves from Mohamed Ige and Jose Mireles (MEX). Crouch and Borrego battled the entire way with Borrego puling away in the last few strides for the win (14:32.90). Crouch won silver in 14:33.33 while Ige took bronze in 14:38.95 and Mireles was fourth in 14:39.75.
2008 World Junior champion Walter Henning took the lead in the men's hammer throw on his first throw with a mark of 69.04m/226-6 and Chris Cralle immediately responded with 69.61m/228-4 on his second throw. Henning improved to 69.33m/227-5 in the fifth round, but would not be able to overtake Cralle who won with a best mark of 70.71m/232-0.
Jeshua Anderson dominated the men's 400m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 49.33 to win the gold medal. Reggie Wyatt was nipped at the tape to finish in third in 50.15 as Winder Cuevas (DOM) finished second in 50.13. Reigning USA Outdoor champion Ti'erra Brown led wire-to-wire in winning the women's 400m hurdles in a meet record 55.14. Tameka Jameson was the runner-up in 55.97.
Kiani Profit won the women's heptathlon with 5,576 points In today's events, Profit won the long jump (5.60m/18-4.5) and the 800m (2:19.19) and took second in the javelin throw (27.45m/90-0). Dorcas Akinniyi finished in second with 5,204.
The men's high jump was a battle between Paul Hamilton and Ricky Robertson. With almost identical progressions and second-attempt clearance for each at 2.23m/7-3.75, a jump-off was needed to determine the winner. Hamilton won the jump-off and was declared the winner as Robertson picked up the silver medal for his efforts.
Curtis Mitchell, who yesterday ran a wind-legal 19.99 in the semi-finals, won the men's 200m in 20.06w (+2.8). Brandon Byram held off Jamaica's Rasheed Dwyer to claim silver in 20.46, while Dwyer finished third in 20.64.
Tiffany Townsend sprinted her way to gold medal, winning the women's 200m in a windy 22.92 (+2.1mps). Candyce McGrone got clipped at the line and finished third in 23.16 while Canada's Kimberly Hyacinthe took second in 23.14.
Christian Taylor claimed his second gold medal of these championships, easily winning the men's triple jump with 16.66m/54-8. Any of Taylor's five legal marks would have won him the competition. Joshua Como won silver with 15.95m/52-4. April Sinkler claimed her second medal of the competition when she placed third in the women's long jump with 6.33m/20-9.25. She just edged out Lauryn Newson, who took fourth with 6.32m/20-9.
Also at the track, the women's 5,000m saw Canada's Jessica O'Connell run away with the win in 17:15.73 while Beatriz Hernandez (MEX) finished second in 17:32.75. Tara Erdmann, who had been ill for most of the day, was third in 18:27.49. Dan Serianni won bronze in the men's 20,000m Race Walk, crossing the line in 1:41:29.23. Jose Moncada took fourth in 1:45:14.51. Rebeka Stowe won the women's 3,000m steeplechase in 10:08.58 as Stephanie Garcis finished second in 10:20.50.
Kurt Roberts crushed the field in the men's shot put, winning with a best mark of 18.60m/61-0.25 while Aaron Studt took runner-up honors with 18.21m/59-9. Marissa Tschida finished third in the women's javelin for bronze with a best effort of 50.07m/164-3, just ahead of Brittany Borman who took fourth with 50.02m/164-1.
