Field events, track prelims featured on Day 3 of Youth Champs
LISLE, Ill. - Ideal results and weather conditions continued into the third day of the 2010 USA Youth Outdoor Championships at The Sports Complex on the campus of Benedictine University, as field events made up most of the day's competition with several running events and preliminary heats mixed in.
Field
A variety of field events were contested today, but Ashley Veatch (Roanoke, Va.) got the ball rolling on Tuesday when she broke the National Record in the Intermediate Girls' Hammer by almost a full meter. Veatch's throw of 47.75m/156-8 broke the previous record of 46.84m/153-8 which was set in 2007 by 2010 USA Outdoor Junior runner up Lauren Chambers who also holds the Young Women's hammer record.
Amir Ali Patterson (Valley United, North Hills, Calif.) won the Youth Boys' shot put with a toss of 15.34m/50-4, more than 10 feet further than second place. Patterson improved on his fifth place finish from the 2009 Youth Championships where he threw 12.70m/41-8. The 2009 Young Women's shot put runner up Jackie Leppelmeier (McComb, Ohio) returned seeking a win this year and did just that with a throw of 12.69m/41-7.75.
Although Matt Harris (Zephyrs TC, LaGrange, Ill.) injured his ankle just a few days ago, he was still able to come up with a winning jump of 6.78m/22-3 to take the Intermediate Boys long jump. Harris may be competing in the high jump later this week depending on the injury.
Tyler Hodge (Calif. Rising Stars, Colton, Calif.) won the Youth Girls' Triple jump with a distance of 10.87m/35-8, while Laque Moen-Davis (Midwest Striders, Omaha, Neb.) won the Young Women's long jump a leap of 6.0m/19-8.25. Moen-Davis also has the top entry for Friday's triple jump. In the Young Men's discus, Gabe Hull (Bloomington, Ind.) won with a throw of 55.87m/183-4 and has the top entry for the Young Men's shot put, which will be contested Friday.
Flying Dragon's Adam Coulon (Bloomington, Ind.) won the Youth Boys' pole vault at a height of 3.25m/10-8, winning by a margin of .45m/18in over his teammate Grant Ross (Minier, Ill.) who jumped 2.80m/9-2.25.
Running
Athletes in all five age groups ran preliminary heats for the 200m and 800m, with the top 8 finishes in each event qualifying for the finals on Saturday. Several finishes were decided by only hundredths of a second, which should make for more exciting races this weekend. In the Youth Girls' 200m prelims, 2010 Youth Olympic Games team member and reigning Youth 200m champion Robin Reynolds (Miami Northwest Express, Miami, Fla.) will take on Kendall Baisdan (Motor City, Franklin, Mich.), who holds the Youth National 200m record and just took first in the 400m (52.59) at the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Championships last week.
Prelims for the 4x400m relays for all age groups were also ran today, with the top 8 teams competing in finals on Sunday. The Intermediate Girls' relay event should be an exciting race as the teams from Motor City (3:51.96) and Track Houston (3:55.48)each ran a speedy sub-4 minute prelim time today.
Kamal Koroso (Young Achievers Sprint Club, Jacksonville, Fla.) won the Intermediate Boys' 3,000m with a time of 9:01.36, nearly 12 seconds faster than the rest of the field. Look for Koroso in the 1,500m prelims on Friday.
