Vashti Cunningham’s high school record and AJR good for AOW

2/12/2016

INDIANAPOLIS -- After breaking high school and American junior records in the indoor high jump, 18-year-old Vashti Cunningham earns USATF Athlete of the Week honors.

Cunningham (Las Vegas, Nevada) cleared 1.95m/6-4.75 at the New Mexico Classic and Multis Indoors meet Saturday, Feb. 6, eclipsing the 32-year-old high school indoor record by almost two inches, in addition to improving the existing indoor AJR by an inch.

“My approach was on perfect, and my speed felt like it was all there. When I cleared the new record, I didn’t even know what it originally was. I just wanted to go in and jump high. The record was just an added surprise.”

Cunningham next competes Feb. 20 at a UNLV open meet.

Other notable performances of the week include:

  • Drew Hunter (Purcellville, Virginia) ran 3:58.25 at the Armory Track Invitational Saturday to break Alan Webb’s indoor high school mile record.
  • Mattie Suver (Colorado Springs, Colorado) won the USATF Cross Country Championships and her first national title with a 10 km finish of 36:38 Saturday in Bend, Oregon.
  • Craig Lutz(Flagstaff, Arizona) won USATF Cross Country Championships after a 10 km finish of 31:40 Saturday for his first national title.
  • Sean Wade (Houston, Texas) shattered the M50 world record in the mile, clocking 4:23.07 to improve the 4:26.75 by Nolan Shaheed in 2002. Age-graded, Wade’s 4:23 is worth 3:50.1 as open time on the Age-Graded Tables.
