DAVIS, Calif. - Jon Vochatzer, whose career as a UC Davis educator, head men’s track & field coach and assistant football coach spanned more than three decades, died Monday at the age of 71.

Vochatzer suffered a stroke in late January shortly before he and his wife, former women’s track coach Deanne Vochatzer, were leaving for a trip to the California central coast. He subsequently battled for two weeks before entering hospice on Wednesday, February 10. Best known for his 30 years at the helm of the UC Davis men's track & field program, Jon Vochatzer earned 11 conference Coach of the Year and six West Region Division II Coach of the Year nods, guiding the Aggies to four top-five finishes at the national meet during the university's final years as an NCAA Division II member. He also represented the university with appointments to numerous coaching staffs on the national and international scene, including the 1999 IAAF World Championships. The two Vochatzers entered the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame in 2013. A more extensive tribute, plus information about services, will be available at www.ucdavisaggies.com in the near future.
