POCATELLO, Idaho – The Idaho State men's and women's track and field teams began the 2016 season inside Holt Arena with the Snake River Open on Friday, Jan. 15. The afternoon featured the women's pentathlon and the men's heptathlon.
"The Bengals had a really good first outing here with the combined events," said Head Coach Dave Nielsen.
Junior Bailey Woodbury won the pentathlon event and qualified for the Big Sky Championships with 3429 points after finishing in the top three of each event and winning the high jump with a height of 1.65m. Idaho State's Hope Mortensen (3103) and Maddison Ward (3055) took second and third respectively for a Bengal sweep in the pentathlon.
"Bailey Woodbury is a champion and has a conference qualifying mark," Nielsen said. "We have some other up and coming people that I thought competed really well."
On the men's side, senior Kyle Searle (2690 points) sits in first for the men's heptathlon with a 115 point lead over teammate James Rodeman (2575 points).
"On the men's side Kyle Searle looks quite good and our freshman Kyle Rodeman did a good job, but they have more to do tomorrow," Nielsen said.
Searle finished first in the 60m, shotput and high jump events while Rodeman had a meet-best 6.45m long jump. Searle's 11.27m throw in the shot put was a personal best. The men will complete their final three heptathlon events tomorrow morning.
