Abrahamsson Garners (University of Cincinnati) Weekly Honor from American Conference

Sophomore horizontal jumper earned Field Athlete of the Week following school record

CINCINNATI - University of Cincinnati track and field sophomore Rebecka Abrahamsson has been named the American Athletic Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. The honor is the first of her career and comes after two solid showings in the horizontal jumps at the 2016 Gladstein Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., last weekend.

Abrahamsson, who entered the season as the program’s triple jump record holder and its ninth-ranked long jumper, has bettered both marks to rewrite the record books in 2016. The Karlshamn, Sweden, native competed in both events over the weekend, raising her triple jump record to 13.05m (42-09.75) while moving into a tie for third-best on UC’s all-time Top 10 in the long jump with her mark of 5.86m (19-02.75). Her long jump finish marks the second-consecutive week she has bettered her personal best in the event.

The conference leader in the triple jump by nearly two feet, Abrahamsson also ranks sixth among NCAA competitors and 37th on the global lists. Her long jump best has her ranked second in the conference.

The award for Abrahamsson marks the second-consecutive week a member of the Bearcats women’s team has been honored following Loretta Blaut earning the same honor last week.

The Bearcats return to Indiana this weekend to take part in the Indiana Relays. The meet will run Friday and Saturday and will have live results updates throughout (check GoBearcats.com and @GoBearcatsTFXC on Twitter for the link when it becomes available).
