AKRON, Ohio - Former University of Akron standout and reigning World Champion Shawn Barber highlighted the performances at the fourth annual Akron Pole Vault Convention on Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Stile Athletics Field House, capturing the men's title with a jump of 18-8 1/4 (5.70m).
Garnering the title in the women's elite competition with a Stile Athletics Field House record clearance of 15-5 1/2 (4.71m) was Katerina Stefanidi. The jump marked the third-best effort in the world this year.
Placing second and third, respectively, in the men's competition was Scott Houston and Peter Geraghty with jumps of 18-4 1/2 (5.60m) and 17-10 1/2 (5.45m). Senior Alex McCune (Pittsburgh, Pa.) making his return from missing the entire 2015 campaign due to injury, was unable to clear the opening height of 16-4 3/4 (5.00m)
In the women's elite event, Demi Payne, also surpassed 15-5 1/2, but finished behind Stefanidi based on having more misses in the competition. Mary Saxer and Becky Holliday placed third and fourth with jumps of 14-9 (4.50m) and 14-4 3/4 (4.39m). Redshirt junior Caroline Hasse (Potsdam, Germany) placed 10th in the women's field with a clearance of 13-7 1/4 (4.15m).
Competing earlier in the day for the Zips was junior Matt Rowland (Bellevue, Ohio), freshman Cole Wigal (Belpre, Ohio), redshirt junior Quentin Cieslinski (Madison, Ohio) and freshman Adam Alexander (Tiffin, Ohio) on the men's side and junior Becky Szabo (North Olmsted, Ohio) on the women's side.
