OVERALL FAVORITES:
Varsity Boys Individuals:
This year’s individual section championship should be a one man race against
the clock. Domenic D’Acquisto of Enterprise comes into the meet as one the
section’s most decorated runners and the overwhelming favorite. The senior
has won section titles in the 1600 and 3200 in track, and is a two-time section
champion in cross country. His winning time of 15:42 from 2008 is the seventh
fastest ever run on the West Valley course, and the second fastest by a
sophomore. However, since that time Domenic has had to overcome injury
problems and limped home in seventh place at last year’s meet. With his
injuries behind him, he has put together a steller senior cross country campaign
and could have his eyes set on the 15:01 course record. With D’Acquisto the

only returning runner from last year’s top ten, the real race will be for the next
few spots. Juniors Eric Neill (Yreka) NAL Champ, and newcomer Dylan
Chamberlen (Paradise) EALS Champ cruised to easy victories last week and
are the best of the rest. Others to look for include junior Tony Meredith
(Foothill) EALN 2nd, sophomore Nimai Buroz EALN 3rd (Chico), senior Russell
Brandt (Oroville) EALS 2nd, Austin Lamkin (Enterprise) EALN 4th, Tim Williams
(Yreka) NAL 2nd, and small schools champ Eric Ghelfi (Redding Adventist).
Varsity Boys Teams:
Division I/II - The two Chico schools, Chico and Pleasant Valley, will square off
for the second week in a row to see who qualifies for state. Chico was 2nd in the
EAL last week with PV 5th, but Pleasant Valley always runs well at the section
finals. Division III - Enterprise is the defending overall section champion and
ranked number one again this year. With the top runner in the section up front
and depth to match, this team should win easily. Should they falter, look for
greatly improved Shasta and Foothill teams to grab the top spot. Division IV –
NAL champ, Yreka and EALS champ, Oroville will battle here for the top spots.
Should either of them falter, look for Corning to vie for the second state meet
berth. Division V – At the Small Schools meet last week on this same course,
perennial small schools champ, Mt. Shasta scored a ten point win over Redding
Adventist. Add in BVL champ, Durham to battle for the two state meet spots.
With all the large schools thrown into the mix, anything can happen. This should
be a good one!! Enterprise has held the top spot in the overall team title ranking
all season long. However, they will be pushed by NAL champion, Yreka and the
EALN runner-up, Chico. As has occurred in the past, anything can happen at the
section finals!
.
Varsity Girls Individuals:
The varsity girls’ race features a veteran group of ladies who have traded
positions in the section rankings all season. In fact, nine of the top ten finishers
from 2009 return. Who will come out on top is anyone’s call. Defending
champion, senior Tiffany Heflin (Lassen) seems to be rounding into form after
breaking the Las Plumas course record last week at the EALS meet. She was
the section runner-up in ’08 and has run the third fastest time ever by a
Northern Section athlete on the state meet course. She is also a former National
Junior Olympic runner-up. Junior, Kody Atkins (Chico) placed 3rd in ’08 and 4th
last fall. The three time EAL champion has a devastating finishing kick and leads
the section’s top ranked team. Senior, Corissa Storms (West Valley) has placed
in the section top 10 in each of the past three years. The defending section 3200
champion in track, Corissa has shown she is ready by setting a new course
record at the NAL championships last week. Last year’s sixth place finisher,
Corissa ran the fourth fastest time in section history on the state meet course last
fall. Also returning from last year’s top ten include sophomore Hannah Dorman
(West Valley) 3rd, senior Lora James (Shasta) 5th, senior Sarah Brandt (Oroville)
7th, junior Amanda Costa (Chico) 8th, senior Morgan Schell (Durham) 9th, and
junior Stephanie Rasmussen (American Christian) 10th.
Varsity Girls Teams:
Division I/II - Chico has another tremendous team! They have the depth and
front runners to win. Division III – Shasta and Foothill will duke it out here with
Shasta having the edge after a 60-77 victory last week. However, should they

stumble, Enterprise will be nipping at their heals. Division IV – Oroville beat West
Valley last year and returns most of their team. However, West Valley is greatly
improved and takes a number two overall ranking into the meet. West Valley
beat Oroville several times earlier in the season, but with Sarah Brandt rounding
into shape, the tide could turn. Division V – University Prep beat Mt. Shasta by
one point at last week’s Small Schools Invite. However, Mt. Shasta was missing
their number one runner. BVL champ, Durham, beat both teams earlier in the
season. Two of the three teams will qualify for state. In the overallsection title
race, EALN champ, Chico is the heavy favorite. After Chico, look for NAL
champ, West Valley, EALS champ Oroville, and EALN foes Shasta and Foothill
to mix it up. It should be a great meet!
