BCL EAST LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS RESULTS AND RACE SUMMARY
NOVEMBER 9, 2010
2.6 MILES AT JOAQUIN MILLER PARK, OAKLAND
COLLEGE PREP SCHOOL, OAKLAND SWEEPS BOYS AND GIRLS TEAM TITLES
STRAIT AND STAYMAN TAKE INDIVIDUAL HONORS
by Coach Steve Gregg (Head-Royce, Oakland)
Despite not running all of their top athletes in the varsity race, the College Prep girls still won their 5th consecutive league title in convincing fashion, scoring 24 points to second place Athenian’s 84 points. Presumably College Prep’s entire varsity team will be on the line in the postseason, as they attempt to improve on last year’s third place finish in the Division V state race.
Senior Adrienne Strait from CPS easily took the individual honors, winning the race by a 35 second margin in a time of 17:11. This was an outstanding time on the course, given the lack of competition and the slightly sloppy course conditions. Other individual runners who are capable of qualifying for the state race from NCS are senior Asha Brundage-Moore from Athenian and freshman Aida Julien from Head-Royce, who took 2nd and 4th place in times that should put them right in the mix to earn state qualifying spots.
College Prep also won the boys team title, scoring 26 points to second place Athenian’s score of 65. Although lacking a real frontrunner this year, CPS displayed their usual outstanding team depth, and could possibly be in the mix to earn one of the five Division V state team qualifying slots at NCS, especially since the University boys have been forced to run in Division IV this year.
In what must be considered to be at least a mild upset, junior Max Stayman from Head-Royce outkicked College Prep’s Julian Compagni-Portis in the last 150 meters to take the individual honors, finishing in a time of 15:23. Max will need to run at least this well at NCS to have any chance at a state individual qualifying spot, but perhaps is peaking at exactly the right time.
