Two-time Olympian Darvis “Doc” Patton has been named the 2002 USA Outdoor 200m champion following the October 22 announcement by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) that the winner of that race, Ramon Clay, has received a doping suspension and been stripped of his title.
With the 2002 title, Patton becomes a two-time national champion at 200m. Patton, who crossed the finish line in the 200m final at the 2002 USA Outdoor Championships in 20.31 seconds, also won the 2003 national title in 20.15. Later that summer, Patton won the 200m silver medal at the World Outdoor Championships in Paris, in addition to a gold medal in the 4x100m relay. He also owns a 4x100m relay gold medal from the 2007 World Outdoor Championships and a relay silver medal from the 2004 Olympic Games.
In recent years Patton has enjoyed success in the 100m, finishing third at the 2010 Olympic Trials and eighth at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Patton was the runner-up in the 100m at the 2009 USA Outdoor Championships and placed eighth later that summer at the World Outdoor Championships in Berlin.
Ramon Clay’s two-year suspension handed down by USADA began on November 9, 2009 and was based on his use and possession of anabolic agents and hormones, and other substances, from 2000-2004. Clay is disqualified from all competitive results achieved on and subsequent to January 1, 2000, the date he first committed the anti-doping rules violations based on evidence gathered by USADA.
