I have been a fan, athlete, coach, official, prep editor, author, blogger, and photographer since 1953.
I have announced the NCAA West, the Pac-12, the Stanford Invitational, the Brutus Hamilton Invitational, the Mt. SAC Relays, the North Coast Section, the Sac-Joaquin Section, and the California State High School Meet.
I have attended five Olympic Games and four World Championships.
I am a U.S. Correspondent for Track and Field News.
Mike Byrnes's article is informative, but it has two possible misstatements, neither of which seems to have been questioned as the article has been hyperlinked on several sites.
1. "Last spring [Hasay] clocked a 9:52.13": True, but that second-best US HS time was in the 3200m, not the two mile as implied. Add 3-4 seconds for a more valid comparison to Fairchild's two-mile indoor record, 9:55.92. Not a major issue.
2. The heading, "Hasay to try for record at NIN": Did Hasay actually state that goal (as she has done sometimes in the past), or did she merely say her first indoor race would be "a very good experience for me and a lot of fun"? If she said she was gunning for the record, she should be quoted and the source should be attributed.
Potentially, this is a major issue. Young runners face enough pressure without being misrepresented regarding their national-record-breaking goals.
