A Brazil-style Opening Ceremony!
 
A year ago already! Olympic.org is giving you the chance to relive the best moments of the Olympic Games held in the "marvellous city", the first to be organised in South America. They kicked off in a legendary location: Rio's Maracana Stadium, where 80,000 spectators and tens of millions of TV viewers followed a colourful Opening Ceremony which set the tone for the next two weeks of the world's greatest sporting spectacle.
 
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 1: When Virginia Thrasher won the first medal in Rio
 
During the first day of competition already full of achievement and emotions, American shooter Virginia Thrasher won the first gold medal of the Rio Games.
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 2: Michael Phelps strikes again!
 
A look back at the second day of the Games in Rio, a year after that Sunday 7 August 2016 when Michael Phelps, who had come out of retirement to take part in his fifth Games, played a decisive role in the second leg of the 4x100m freestyle, helping the USA to beat France, unbeaten in the event since London 2012.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 3: Australia writes a chapter of Olympic history
 
Day three was marked by the Australian women's rugby sevens team victory in the final against New Zealand, for the sport's triumphal return to the Games after a 92-year absence.
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 4: Michael Phelps and Simone Biles take centre stage
 
Michael Phelps won two more gold medals in the space of an hour, in the 200m butterfly and the 4x200m freestyle, bringing his total medal haul to 22. The brilliant Simone Biles lit up the women's team competition to help the United States to victory.

Rio 2016 - Day 5: King Kohei Uchimura retains his title right at the death
 
Kohei Uchimura managed to defend his title in the men's gymnastics all-around competition after it went down to the wire against Ukraine's Oleg Vernaiev.
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 6: Michael Phelps unsurpassable, Simone Biles brilliant
 
Michael Phelps made winning his 22nd gold medal look easy; Simone Biles lit up the individual all-around artistic gymnastics competition; and the Fijian rugby wizards were in seventh heaven!
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 7: Almaz Ayana shatters the 10,000m world record
 
The start of the athletics events saw Ethiopia's Almaz Ayana shatter the world 10,000m record, while Michael Phelps won his 27th Olympic swimming medal, German rider Isabell Werth scaled the heights of Olympic equestrianism and French judoka Teddy Riner added another title to his list of wins.
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 8: Phelps bows out with a 23rd title, Elaine Thompson becomes the new queen of the sprint
 
The eighth day of competition marked the end of the swimming events, with Michael Phelps claiming a 23rd gold medal. Jamaica's Elaine Thompson won the women's 100m title in athletics while Puerto Rico's Monica Puig aced the final of the women's tennis singles.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 9: Van Niekerk, Bolt, Murray, Whitlock, Biles, Kenny and Rose shine!
 
A day of legends, with the incredible 400m world record by South African Wayde Van Niekerk; the triple over 100m by Jamaican Usain Bolt; the dramatic victory by Briton Justin Rose in the first Olympic golf tournament in 112 years; the historic achievements of Great Britain's Andy Murray in tennis, Max Whitlock in gymnastics and Jason Kenny in track cycling; and Simone Biles continuing to add to her haul of gold.
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 10: Drama in the men's pole vault and the women's beam!
 
The athletics in the evening was marked by David Rudisha's double in the 800m, Shaunae Miller's dive at the finish of the 400m, and the incredible win by Thiago Braz Da Silva in the pole vault. Simone Biles came to grief on the beam and handed the title to Sanne Wevers. Charlotte Dujardin's dazzling display secured her a second consecutive dressage title; and Cuban Greco-Roman wrestler Mijain Lopez won his third.

Rio 2016 - Day 11: Simone Biles goes down in history, a British couple at their peak
 
Relive the day of Tuesday 16 August 2016 in Rio on olympic.org. Simone Biles completes an amazing week with the floor title, her fourth gold medal in Rio, earning her a place among the greatest gymnasts in history. British cyclists Jason Kenny and Laura Trott win gold on the track of the Olympic velodrome.
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 12: Kaori Icho's four out of four; Elaine Thompson is queen of the sprint
 
Japanese wrestler Kaori Icho claimed a first for women: a fourth consecutive gold medal, remaining undefeated at the Olympic Games! Jamaica's Elaine Thompson achieved the rare 100m/200m double in women's athletics, and China won a new table tennis Grand Slam.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 13: Usain Bolt on top of the world
 
The day was marked by the "triple double" of Usain Bolt, who won the 200m, the Brownlee brothers' family double in the triathlon, Argentina's first-ever hockey victory and the end of the beach volleyball, sailing and canoe/kayak sprint competitions.
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 14: New triple for Bolt, Germany at the summit of women's football
 
Usain Bolt competed in his last race at the Games, the 4x100m relay, and achieved a new triple. Wins for Germany in the women's football, Carolina Marín for Spain in badminton and Cheick Sallah Cisse in taekwondo for Cote d'Ivoire marked amazing firsts; Russia remained undefeated in synchronised swimming; while Mariana Pajon reigned supreme in BMX!
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 15: Park in-bee makes history; Neymar, Farah and Felix at the top of their game
 
An action-packed day provided several moments of Olympic history, with Park In-bee triumphing in the women's golf, Neymar giving Brazil its first-ever Olympic title and Allyson Felix becoming the most decorated female athlete ever, and a whole lot more besides!
 
 
 
 
 
Rio 2016 - Day 16: The final fireworks!
 
The American men's basketball team concluded the proceedings by winning the 306th and last gold medal, at the end of an exciting final against Serbia. Denmark surprised everyone by beating France in the men's handball; the Brazilian volleyball players delighted the home crowd at the Maracanazinho; Estelle Mossely and Tony Yoka were boxing's golden pair; Russia maintained its rhythmic gymnastics supremacy; Nino Schurter finally triumphed in the MTB; and Eliud Kipchoge did the same in the marathon!
