Kiplagat Wins NYRR New York Mini 10K

41st edition celebrates 40 years of the original women-only road race and Title IX; 6,100-plus finishers in Central Park

Jim Gerweck, Running USA wire

NEW YORK - (June 9, 2012) - On a day when the NYRR New York Mini 10K celebrated 40 years of being the first, and often the best, women-only race in the world, Kenya's Edna Kiplagat used some nostalgia of her own to pull away from Aheza Kiros of Ethiopia for a victory under cloudy and somewhat muggy conditions in Central Park.

After running through the first three and a half miles at 5:15 pace with a pack of half a dozen, Kiplagat, 32, reprised her winning move from the 2010 ING New York City Marathon, dropping a 4:48 split on the park's east side to shred the group and make the only uncertainty not who would win, but by how much.

The final answer to that question was 10 seconds, Kiplagat crossing the same finish line as the marathon in 32 minutes, 8 seconds. Kiros and Hilda Kibet, Kiplagat's former countrywoman who now represents The Netherlands, were well back in 32:18 and 32:34 respectively. Kiplagat sliced 16 seconds off her time from last year when she placed fourth behind Kenya's Linet Masai.

"It was good running on the same roads as the marathon," Kiplagat commented afterward. "I knew there was a downhill after we got to the top [of the hill past 5K] and decided to push." Kiplagat, who took home $10,000, ran a negative split: 16:20 first 5K vs. 15:48 second 5K.

The early pacesetting duties had been handled by Lindsey Scherf, who grew up not far north of Manhattan, and raced often in the park during her days as a youth phenom. She would finish ninth in 33:26, good for second American.

The top U.S. finisher was Stephanie Rothstein, who finished 6th and used the race as a combination of a tune-up for the Olympic Track Trials later this month as well as a bounce back from January's Olympic Marathon Trials, where she was forced to drop out at 23 miles.

"I still don't know exactly what happened in Houston," said the UCSB grad who clocked 33:04, a personal road record, and also earned $5000 U.S.-only prize money. "We may never know - that's the nature of the marathon. But my coach [Greg McMillan] and I decided it was time to get back on the track.

"I recover pretty fast so we figured this was a perfect hard effort two weeks before the 10,000 in Eugene, and this gives me a lot of confidence. My goal today, and at the end of the month, is to be in the mix, and I was pretty successful in doing that today."

At the 41st edition, the professionals were joined by 6,100-plus finishers on Saturday morning, including Jacqueline Dixon, who won the first edition of the event over a field of 78. Kathrine Switzer, who ran the first race and won the following year, paid homage to its history by running in an almost threadbare shirt from the first race, emblazoned with "Crazy Legs Mini Marathon" in bright pink.

"It's hard to believe that 40 years ago it was considered crazy that women should run long distances," said NYRR CEO Mary Wittenberg, who competed in the race herself. "Today, we all showed just how far we've come."

Walt Disney World Marathon Changes Course for 20th Edition
2013 Disney Marathon route to go through baseball stadium and speedway; course tweaks build on list of new 2013 enhancements; also a specially-designed 20th edition Mickey Mouse medal

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - (June 7, 2012) - Runners in the 20th Walt Disney World Marathon in January 2013 will have the unique experience of running along a speedway and through a baseball stadium - in addition to Disney's four theme parks - as part the latest enhancements designed to celebrate the event's two decades of existence.

The 2013 Disney Marathon course will again start at Epcot. But runners will go through the Magic Kingdom and then, for the first time ever, run through the high-banked Walt Disney World Speedway where stock cars, Indy cars and exotic supercars typically roar around the one-mile tri-oval track. And later the course will take runners to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and through the complex's Champion Stadium, a major-league style ballpark that's the Atlanta Braves' annual spring training home.

"Running through the speedway and the ballpark should provide quite a thrill for the runners,'' said veteran race director Jon Hughes. "These very creative enhancements should make for a pretty memorable 20th anniversary marathon that people will probably be talking about for 20 more years.''

The marathon's commemorative route changes add to the new enhancements recently announced, including enhanced entertainment along Mile 20, a specially-designed 20th edition Mickey Mouse medal and a new post-race party at Downtown Disney.

In addition to the 26.2-mile marathon, the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend presented by Cigna (Jan. 10-13) will feature events for the entire family such as Kids' Races throughout the weekend, including the Mickey Mile, a Family Fun Run 5K on Friday, the Half Marathon on Saturday and the Marathon on Sunday. There is also Goofy's Race and a Half Challenge which involves running the Half Marathon and the full Marathon - 39.3 miles! The Health and Fitness Expo runs throughout the weekend at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and features the latest in running technology and fashion, as well as renowned running experts like Jeff Galloway, the official training consultant for runDIsney.

Mayor's High Five Award Searching for Applicants for Philadelphia Marathon
Award highlights a marathoner's personal journey to 2012 event on Sunday, November 18

PHILADELPHIA - (June 9, 2012) - On Sunday, November 18, Mayor Michael A. Nutter will once again honor a race participant in the 26.2-miler who overcame great adversity to reach the Philadelphia Marathon starting line. Mayor Nutter is committed to supporting participants each year at the event - from leading the Philadelphia Marathon Weekend kick off at the Health & Fitness Expo to offering high-fives to race participants at the start and finish lines on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. For the third consecutive year, one participant will receive the Mayor's High Five Award - an honor presented by Mayor Nutter to acknowledge a race participant's path to reach his or her goal of being in the 19th Philadelphia Marathon.

"The Mayor's High Five Award highlights a marathoner's personal journey on the road to participating in the Philadelphia Marathon," said Mayor Nutter. "Although many encounter challenges, it's how our race participants rise up to meet these obstacles that is worthy of our attention. If you know someone who has overcome an injury, triumphed over an illness, or conquered negative beliefs about the ability to run a marathon, we want to hear that story. We encourage our race participants to share their compelling stories and personal victories of courage and compassion leading to the Philadelphia Marathon starting line."

Submit a nomination for the 2012 Mayor's High Five Award (500 words or less) to HighFiveAward@gmail.com, now through midnight Eastern Standard Time by Thursday, November 1, 2012. Include the first and last name, a current address, hometown (if from Philadelphia, please include which neighborhood), age, contact number and email address. More information is also available on the Philadelphia Marathon website at www.philadelphiamarathon.com.

Candidates must be willing to make their story public through the media. Mayor Nutter will announce the recipient of the Mayor's High Five Award at the Philadelphia Marathon Weekend news conference kick off, to be held Friday, November 16, 2012. The recipient will also be featured in the 2012 Philadelphia Marathon Race Weekend Guide distributed to race participants and media members. Mayor Nutter also will recognize the 2012 Mayor's High Five Award recipient at the Philadelphia Marathon starting line on the morning of Sunday, November 18. The Philadelphia Marathon begins at 7:00am at 22nd Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Anyone can nominate a 2012 Philadelphia Marathon participant who is registered for the full marathon, and interested participants are permitted to nominate themselves.

The first-ever Mayor's High Five Award was given to runner Kathleen Wrigley, from Fargo, North Dakota, in 2010. The Philadelphia native and mother of three overcame three brain aneurysms and the loss of half her vision to compete in the Philadelphia Marathon. Wrigley was motivated to run the Philadelphia Marathon to raise awareness about brain aneurysms and early detection, as well as to honor her brother Danny Boyle, a fallen Philadelphia police officer.

"I'm not an elite runner, by any means," Wrigley said. "I run because after three brain aneurysm surgeries and suffering some setbacks - I can run. I want my kids to see that their mother is able. I consider receiving the Mayor's High Five Award the proudest moment of my running life."

The second Mayor's High Five Award recipient was Jude Dinan, from Troy, New York. Dinan was nominated by her sister Katria Hitrick. Hitrick told marathon organizers that Dinan, 52, became severely ill with what was believed to be lung cancer. Although Dinan was never a smoker, she was diagnosed with having a large tumor on her lung that gave her extreme chest and back pain - making her so weak that showering, dressing, and eating were strenuous daily tasks. A second diagnosis revealed Dinan had actually inhaled mold and crystal spores that were beginning to shut down her organs. Dinan slowly began recovering after taking antibiotics and medicine used to counteract anthrax. Over several months, Dinan gradually regained strength - using the Philadelphia Marathon as the best platform to celebrate a second chance at life.

"Winning the Mayor's High Five Award is an honor that humbled me," Dinan said. "The Mayor's High Five Award does something no other marathon does - it takes the time to recognize the effort of the majority of runners and their story bringing them to the starting line. Winning this award speaks to the connection we all share when we endeavor to achieve a goal. My experience winning the Mayor's High Five Award was wonderful and I am grateful."

More than 27,000 runners and over 60,000 spectators will be in Philadelphia, the city to experience "The Best Time of Your Life"™ during Marathon Weekend - Friday, November 16 to Sunday, November 18. In addition to Sunday's Philadelphia Marathon, Race Weekend offers three races - the Half Marathon, the Rothman Institute 8K, and the Kids Fun Run. Other activities to welcome runners, families, friends, spectators, businesses and residents include a free two-day Health & Fitness Expo; a free course map complete with retail discounts and promotions; and a key to more than 20 spectacular cheer zones. Race participants pass many of Philadelphia's famous attractions on the swift and scenic USATF-certified course, which is a Boston qualifier.
