Gillettes Sweep to Victory at 48th Atlanta Marathon

Inaugural Atlanta Marathon Relay draws 300 teams; Atlanta Track Club's Adopt a Marathon Mile program raises money for local nonprofits

By Tracy Lott, ATC

ATLANTA - (October 30, 2011) - Nearly 1,200 marathon participants and 300 relay teams toed the line at the Atlanta Marathon and Marathon Relay on Sunday morning. The event started and finished at Atlantic Station near Midtown Atlanta. 2011 marked the 48th running of the Atlanta Marathon, which was previously held in conjunction with the Atlanta Half Marathon on Thanksgiving Day, as well as the inaugural running of the Atlanta Marathon Relay.

"From the sell-out of the inaugural Atlanta Marathon Relay, to the near perfect weather conditions and fantastic course support from our volunteers and the 18 Atlanta-based nonprofit organizations that were part of the Atlanta Track Club's Adopt a Marathon Mile program, we couldn't have asked for a better event," said Tracey Russell, Executive Director of the Atlanta Track Club.

In a first for the Atlanta Marathon, the husband and wife duo of Justin Gillette and Melissa Gillette, both 28 of Goshen, Ind. took home the titles in 2 hours, 33 minutes, 45 seconds and 3:01:40 respectively. Justin took the lead early in the race around mile three and was able to maintain his lead throughout, crossing the finish nearly seven and a half minutes ahead of runner-up Charles Slick of Atlanta. Melissa drew her motivation to tackle the hilly, Atlanta course from the crowd support along the way which contributed to her nearly six minute lead over second place finisher Patricia Coppel of Atlanta.

The Atlanta Track Club Men's Open Team made up of Cory Baumann, Mike Gerber, Andrew Mearns and Piotr Witczak took top honors in the men's relay division with a time of 2:23:28 at the Atlanta Marathon Relay, while team "birthday CAKE" made up of Anna Collins, Kay Crawford, Clara Easterlin and Elyse Ensor claimed first in the women's relay division with a time of 3:23:59.

Throughout the Atlanta Marathon and Marathon Relay participants were treated to aid station and cheer zone support from 18 metro Atlanta based nonprofits that were selected to be part of the Atlanta Track Club's Adopt a Marathon Mile program.

The various organizations each adopted a mile of the course and provided a minimum of 30 volunteers to support an aid station and cheer zone within their mile. Organizations that met the minimum requirements during the event will receive a $3500 - $7500 donation from the Atlanta Track Club based on each organization's level of support.

Macias, Mallon Set Course Records at Wine Country Half Marathon

In sprint finish Macias edges Reyes at 4th edition; Mallon's third California series title earns Vertical Flight Award

From Matt Dockstader

HEALDSBURG, Calif. - (October 29, 2011) - It turned out to be a picture perfect, and fast, day at the fourth running of the Healdsburg Wine Country Half Marathon on Saturday morning. Defending champion and Mexican citizen Mario Macias from Alamosa, Colo. and Julia Mallon of Santa Rosa (Santa Rosa HS 1997, Stanford) both set course records and took home $1000 in cash, a 3 liter bottle of Coppola wine and a Ball Watch.

Mallon, 32, a previous winner of the Napa-to-Sonoma and Santa Barbara Wine Country Half Marathons, captured her third series title, thus earning the Vertical Flight Award for winning all three California races. The Stanford grad finished in a course record time of 1 hour, 17 minutes, 34 seconds, defeating women's runner-up Madeline Kramer of Berkeley (1:19:24).

For Macias, it was a battle from start-to-finish with 2009 race champion Sergio Reyes of Palmdale, Calif. The pair ran together for the entire 13.1 miles, often exchanging the lead but ultimately running side-by-side. In the final yards, Macias, 26, edged Reyes at the tape, with a course record time of 1:04:34 vs. 1:04:35 for Reyes. By nearly a minute, both were under Macias' course record time of 1:05:30 set in 2010.

"We both felt very good and could not seem get any distance between us," Macias recounted. "At mile eleven we knew it was going to come down to the final sprint and we both had some kick left so I did not even know who won until we saw the results. What an amazing race on a beautiful day!"

More than 1,800 runners from 40 different states completed the Halloween and wine harvest themed race that starts at Francis Ford Coppola Winery and finishes at the base of Lake Sonoma. Many runners came dressed in costume and enjoyed the various offerings on course, including the Sauvignon Blanc and peanut butter pretzels served at mile seven.

The post-race Wine and Music Festival featured top wines from the region and two bands on a perfectly warm, sunny day. The top three finishers in each age division won bottles of wine at the awards ceremony and prizes were also given to the two top teams and top three costumes. The monkey Curious George and her handler took top honors for best costume.

The Healdsburg Wine Country Half Marathon is produced by Destination Races of Sonoma, California. The Wine Country Half Marathon series consists of five races including Santa Barbara wine country, Northern Virginia, Napa-to-Sonoma, Oregon (Willamette Valley) and Healdsburg.
