USTFCCCA releases who’s who in Division III

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced on Tuesday the winners of USTFCCCA Region Athletes and Coaches of the Year honors for the 2011 cross country season in Division III as voted by the division’s coaches.
UW-Oshkosh will host the NCAA Championships, Nov. 19, at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winneconne, Wis. The women’s race will begin at noon ET followed by the men’s race at 1 p.m. ET.

Men’s Athletes of the Year
ATLANTIC REGION - Lee Berube, SUNY Geneseo
Berube, a senior from Putnam Station, N.Y., won the Atlantic region by 12 seconds over St. Lawrence’s John Johnston for his second-consecutive region win. Berube also won his third-straight SUNYAC title two weeks earlier.
CENTRAL REGION - Ben Sathre, St. Thomas (Minn.)
A senior from Chaska, Minn., Sathre went wire-to-wire with a 20-second win in the Central region for a second-straight regional title. Sathre was also won the MIAC title by more than 32 seconds this fall.
GREAT LAKES REGION - Kevin McCarthy, Wabash
McCarthy, a senior from Zionsville, Ind., won the Great Lakes region by 13 seconds with a 24:31 clocking. He was second at the NCAC Championships a few weeks ago.
MIDEAST REGION - Bobby Over, Allegheny
A junior from Wadsworth, Ohio, Over won the Mideast region and first outright cross country race by less than a second in a tight finish ahead of Haverford’s Eric Arnold. Over was eighth at the NCAC race as his team finished as runners-up.
MIDWEST REGION - Matthew Perez, North Central (Ill.)
Perez, a sophomore from Hanover Park, Ill., won the Midwest by 13 seconds in 24:41 ahead of Michael Burnstein of Washington (Mo.). Perez led the Cardinals with an individual title to a perfect team score at CCIW Championships.
NEW ENGLAND REGION - Michael Schmidt, Middlebury
A senior from Wilmette, Ill., took the New England Regional race in 24:40, bettering the field by 15 seconds for his second region crown. He also was the NESCAC champion this fall.
SOUTH/SOUTHEAST REGION - John Kieffer, Centre
Kieffer, a sophomore from Dublin, Ohio, won the region by nine seconds, placing ahead of Roanoke’s Tim Smith. He was also the individual runner-up at the SCAC meet, leading his team to a second-place overall finish.
WEST REGION - Jackson Brainerd, Colorado College
A senior from Littleton, Colo., Brainerd was the West’s winner by six seconds. Brainerd led his team to their third-straight SCAC league title with his third-straight individual conference crown.
Women’s Athletes of the Year
ATLANTIC REGION - Stefanie Braun, Plattsburgh State
Braun, a senior from Dix Hills, N.Y., claimed the Atlantic region crown by outsprinting Rowan’s Jena Peacock to the chute in a four-tenths of a second victory. Braun was the winner of the SUNYAC crown this fall as well.
CENTRAL REGION - Linda Keller, Minnesota Morris
A junior from Hawick, Minn., won the Central region by 12 seconds ahead of Wartburg’s Alana Enabnit. And, also this fall and for the third-straight year, Keller won the UMAC individual crown.
GREAT LAKES REGION - Alison Steinbrunner, Ohio Northern
Steinbrunner, a junior from New Carlisle, Ohio, brought home the Great Lakes Region title in 21:27 to notch a six-second victory. She also won the OAC Championship crown for the second-straight year in leading her team to a second-straight title.
MIDEAST REGION - Taylor Ludman, Dickinson
A sophomore from Willow Street, Pa., Ludman won the Mideast crown by a second over Franklin & Marshall’s Sheena Crawley. Ludman also won the Centennial Conference title in a dash through heavy snow.
MIDWEST REGION - Christy Cazzola, UW-Oshkosh
Cazzola, a senior from Kaukauna, Wis., won the Midwest region crown by 22 seconds, clocking 21:31 in the 6k race. Cazzola also won the WIAC for a second-straight year this season.
NEW ENGLAND REGION - Chiara Del Piccolo, Williams
A sophomore from Basalt, Colo., Del Piccolo won the New England region race in 20:53, 14 seconds ahead of Wellesley’s Randelle Boots. De Piccolo also won the NESCAC crown this fall.
SOUTH/SOUTHEAST REGION - Sophia Stone, Mary Baldwin
Stone, a sophomore hailing from Pacific Palisades, Calif., won the region by five seconds over Emory’s Tess Gallegos. She also won the USA South Conference title this season with a course-record time.
WEST REGION - Annie Lydens, Pomona-Pitzer
A junior from Tokyo, Japan, Lydens won the West by seven seconds with a 21:26 clocking over Lewis & Clark’s Illana Livstrom. For Lydens, the region win was her fourth-straight victory this season as she also to the SCIAC crown this fall for the second-straight year
Men’s Coaches of the Year
ATLANTIC REGION - John Newman, St. Lawrence
Newman’s squad won the Atlantic region for the first time since 2000 with a 89-95 victory over nearest challenger SUNY Geneseo. The team also won the Liberty League title this fall for the 18th-straight time. Newman is in his 11th year at St. Lawrence.
CENTRAL REGION - Ted Bulling, Nebraska Wesleyan
Bulling’s team won the Central region with a 93-107 score over runner-up St. Olaf. The top three for NWU went 12-14-15 in the region race. NWU also won the GPAC title this fall. Bulling is in his 22nd year as cross country coach at Nebraska Wesleyan.
GREAT LAKES REGION - Brian Cashdollar, Manchester
Manchester’s men’s team placed third in the Great Lakes region race, improving from a 14th-place showing the year before. Cashdollar’s crew also won the HCAC crown for the third-straight year this fall. Cashdollar is in his 14th year at the helm at Manchester.
MIDEAST REGION - Tom Donnelly, Haverford
Donnelly’s team won the Mideast region by 77 points over Dickinson, 52-129. The squad placed second and fourth in the race and all seven of his runners earned All-Region honors. Haverford also won the Centennial Conference title for the second-straight year.
MIDWEST REGION - Al Carius, North Central (Ill.)
Carius’s team in 2011 won the Midwest region title by 72 points, 42-114 over runners-up Washington (Mo.). In addition, his squad won the CCIW title for the 38th-consecuvite time, doing so this fall with a perfect score. Carius is in his 46th year at North Central.
NEW ENGLAND REGION - Nicole Wilkerson, Middlebury
First-year coach Wilkerson led her squad to a second-place finish in the New England region, improving from fourth a year ago. The squad was runner-up to Williams by just a point, 88-89 in the region race. Middlebury was fourth at the NESCAC Championships this fall.
SOUTH/SOUTHEAST REGION - Doug Thomasey, Lynchburg
Lynchburg won the region, 112-113, over Centre College for the second-straight regional win. Thomasey’s crew also won the ODAC crown for the fourth-straight year. Thomasey is in his second year leading the Hornets.
WEST REGION - Robert Bartlett, Occidental
Bartlett’s team tied Colorado College in points, 76-76, for the West region title. Occidental placed their top three runners in the race’s top 11 for Occidental’s first region title since 1991. Occidental also finished first at the SCIAC meet this year. Bartlett is in his seventh year at Occidental.
Women’s Coaches of the Year
ATLANTIC REGION - Mike Howard, St. Lawrence
For a third-straight time St. Lawrence won the Atlantic region crown this fall. Howard’s bunch placed four in the race’s top 15 to secure a 77-91 victory over nearest challenger SUNY Geneseo. St. Lawrence also won their tenth-straight Liberty League crown this fall. Howard is in his 13th year at St. Lawrence.
CENTRAL REGION - Steve Johnson, Wartburg
Wartburg won the Central region, 63-85, over Carleton for the squad’s first region title since 2008. Wartburg also claimed the IIAC title this fall with just 28 points, placing their top four runners in the race’s top six. Johnson is in his 23rd year at Wartburg.
GREAT LAKES REGION - Brian Diemer, Calvin
Diemer’s team won the Great Lakes region, 69-96, over Ohio Northern by placing four in the race’s top 12. For Calvin, the region win was their fifth-straight in the Great Lakes. Also this fall, Calvin was second at the MIAA Championships by just three points to Hope College. Diemer is in his sixth year at Calvin.
MIDEAST REGION - Bobby Van Allen, Johns Hopkins
Johns Hopkins won the Mideast, 78-99, over Dickinson as their top three runners went 6-8-10 in the race. For JHU and Coach Van Allen, it was the team’s fourth-straight region title. In addition, the Centennial Conference was won for the fourth-straight year. Van Allen is in his 13th season at the helm at JHU.
MIDWEST REGION - Jeff Stiles, Washington (Mo.)
Stiles’ team won the Midwest region with just 24 points, winning by 91 over UW-Eau Claire. The squad finished all seven runners in the overall top 20, going 2-3-4-6-9-14-19. In addition for Stiles in his 11th year at WASHU, the Bears won a third-straight UAA title this fall.
NEW ENGLAND REGION - Nicole Wilkerson, Middlebury
Wilkerson’s crew won the New England region for the fourth-straight year, 55-60, over Williams College, placing three runners in the top ten. Middlebury also finished second in the NESCAC this year. The 2011 season is the first for Wilkerson at the helm at Middlebury.
SOUTH/SOUTHEAST REGION - John Curtin, Emory
Emory won the region, 45-86, over Rhodes as team’s five placed in the race’s top 15. Emory took third at the UAA Championships for 27th-year coach Curtin.
WEST REGION - John Goldhammer, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
Goldhammer’s group won the West region by 92 points over Willamette, placing their top five in the race’s overall top 11. For CMS, it was their second-straight region win. Goldhammer’s team also won their second-straight SCIAC title this fall. Goldhammer is in his 28th year with the team.
