Victory Tour for World Champion Jenny Simpson to Wrap Up at Fifth Avenue Mile

Bernard Lagat returns to chase his first Fifth Avenue Mile crown against strong men's field at 31st edition of iconic road mile on September 24; stellar field also includes World Championships medalists Hannah England, Sally Kipyego and two-time defending race champion Shannon Rowbury and men's defending champion Amine Laalou

NEW YORK - (September 14, 2011) - Just weeks after her stunning 1500 meter victory at the World Championships, Jenny Simpson of the United States will conclude her "victory lap" tour by running the Fifth Avenue Mile on Saturday, September 24, it was announced by New York Road Runners president and CEO Mary Wittenberg.

Simpson became the first American woman to win the 1500m world title since Mary Decker (Orange HS, CA)in 1983 with her surprising victory at the World Championships in Daegu, South Korea, earlier this month. The win capped a spectacular comeback for Simpson, who was slowed last year by a stress fracture and earlier this year by flu-like symptoms.

"After winning a World Championship medal, I can't think of a more American place to return than New York City," said Simpson, 25, of Monument, CO, who is the U.S. record holder in the 3000 meter steeplechase. "I want to share the excitement of my season with everyone who had touched my career in a positive way. The Fifth Avenue Mile's spirit of community running and celebration will be the perfect stage for me to complete my season. I'm so excited to be a part of it!"

World Championships silver medalists Sally Kipyego, 25, of Kenya (10,000m) and Hannah England, 24, of Great Britain (1500m), two-time defending champion and 2009 World Championships 1500m bronze medalist Shannon Rowbury (Sacred Heart Cathedral, San Francisco), 26, of the USA, and USA 800m champion Alysia Montano (Canyon HS, Canyon Country; California) 25, are sure to give Simpson lots of competition in the 31st edition of the road mile.

"It has been a breakout season for Jenny, and a strong performance here in the most famous city mile in the world against a glittering lineup of rivals would put an exclamation point on her year," said Wittenberg.

Two-time Olympic medalist and multi-World Championships medalist Bernard Lagat of the United States will continue his quest to add this crown to his glittering trophy case against a stellar field featuring defending champion Amine Laalou of Morocco and reigning USA 800m champion and 2008 Olympian Nick Symmonds.

Lagat, of Tucson, AZ, finished runner-up in 2010 and 2008 and was fourth in 2009 in the race down one of the most famous thoroughfares in the world.

"I said I'm coming until I win it, so this year I'm going to win it and will be prepared for that," said Lagat, 36, who took the silver medal at the World Championships 5000 meters this month. "I'm going to be tough to beat in New York."

Lagat is the U.S. record holder in the 1500, 3000 and 5000 meters outdoors, an eight-time Wanamaker Mile winner at the Millrose Games, and a four-time medalist at the World Championships, including a double victory at 1500 and 5000 meters in 2007. He was also a two-time Olympic medalist at 1500 meters while running for his native Kenya, earning the silver in 2004 and the bronze in 2000. Lagat has had a successful 2011, including breaking the 21-year-old U.S. indoor record in the 2-mile run; he also holds the American indoor records at 1500 meters, 1 mile and 3000 meters.

Laalou, 29, of Morocco, won the Fifth Avenue Mile in 2010 in a time of 3 minutes, 50.83 seconds. He finished fifth in the 2009 World Championship 800 meters and won the 1500 meters at the 2010 IAAF Continental Cup.

Other top entrants in the field:
Symmonds, 27, of Eugene, OR, is the reigning and four-time U.S. 800m champion. He recently placed fifth at that distance at the 2011 World Championships.
Ingvill MÃ¥kestad Bovim, 30, of Norway, placed sixth at the World Championships and fifth at the 2011 European Indoor Championships, both at 1500 meters.
Anthony Famiglietti, 32, of Davidson, NC, is a two-time Olympian in the 3000m steeplechase and a versatile middle- to long-distance runner with a range from 1500 meters to the half-marathon. He has run 3:55.71 for the mile. He has seen limited competitive action in 2010 and 2011.
The Fifth Avenue Mile begins near East 80th Street and finishes at East 60th Street. The wheelchair and handcycle race will kick off the event at 9:00am. After that, entrants will run in heats according to age and gender. The professional women's race is scheduled to start at 12:50pm, followed by the professional men's race at 1:05pm. A total prize purse of $30,000 for the men's and women's professional races will be offered, with the two race champions each receiving $5000.

Professional Field Announced for 2011 Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon

Defending champion, two men with sub-60 minute bests eye course record; New Zealand's Kim Smith leads loaded women's field; large group of U.S. runners aiming to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials in Houston; Bret Michaels to headline finish line concert at Philadelphia Art Museum

PHILADELPHIA - (September 14, 2011) - The Rock 'n' Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon has become one of the world's most prestigious road races, and rightfully so. Known as the Philadelphia Distance Run for 32 years, the rebranded event enters its second year as part of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series on Sunday, September 18, 2011.

"Philadelphia is the premier half-marathon in the world. It is an event that has grown tremendously from a local half-marathon into the great American road race," said Tracy Sundlun, SVP of Competitor Group and organizer of the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series, which will feature more than 26 events around the world in 2012. "The best athletes in the world compete. It is also perhaps the most beautiful half-marathon, running to City Hall, down Market Street, along the SchuylkillRiver and with a finish in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art."

Over the years the race has attracted such world class talent and record setters as Lasse Viren, Rod Dixon, Khalid Khannouchi, Mark Curp, Michael Musyoki, Steve Jones and Dionicio Ceron. On the women's side, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Catherine Ndereba, Derartu Tulu, Meseret Defar, Deena Kastor, Ingrid Kristiansen and Colleen De Reuck are just some of the outstanding runners who have competed. In the 33-year history of the event, five world records and three U.S. records have gone down.

"It's got a history of being one of the fastest races out there," said Matt Turnbull, elite athlete coordinator for the Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series. "It has a rich history of attracting the best road racers in the world. It's an easy sell."

Last year's elite race was no exception. Both the men's and women's winners set course records. Twenty-one-year-old Matthew Kisorio of Kenya won the men's race by more than a minute in 1 hour and 16 seconds - nine seconds under the previous course mark of 1:00:27 set by Khannouchi in 1997. In the women's race, Defar, the sensational Ethiopian track champion, smashed the women's mark with a 1:07:45 clocking - a U.S. All-Comer's record at the time and eight seconds under Kastor's mark established in 2005. Runner-up Lineth Chepkirui of Kenya, who crossed the line only two seconds after Defar, was also under the old women's record.

Kisorio, last year's men's champion, made his half-marathon debut at Philadelphia a year ago a stunning one. He is returning to defend his crown this year and will face formidable opposition once again. Kisorio, who set personal bests this year at 10,000 meters on the track and 10K and 25K on the roads, also improved his half-marathon best to 1:00:03 at Milan.

Other highly touted competitors are Sammy Kitwara of Kenya, Abderrahim Goumri of Morocco, along with Ethiopian Markos Geneti. Kitwara's half-marathon best is an impressive 58:58 from Rotterdam in 2009. He has run 1:00:26 this year, and last year ran under 1:01 two times. Goumri, a 2:05:30 marathoner, set his half-marathon personal best in Philadelphia last year by finishing third in 1:01:33. Geneti won the Honda LA Marathon earlier this year - his debut at the distance - in 2:06:35. Also in the men's field is Peter Kamais of Kenya, who won the 2010 NYC half-marathon in a personal best of 59:53.

"Philadelphia deserves to have world class times," added Turnbull. "It's surprising no one has broken one hour in the past, although seven men have been under 61 minutes. This could be the year. That's what we're hoping for."

In the women's race for the 34th edition, New Zealand's Kim Smith, who broke Defar's U.S. All-Comers record with a 1:07:36 clocking at February's Rock 'n' Roll Mardi Gras 1/2 Marathon in New Orleans, is considered the favorite. Among those aligned against her will be Mizuho Nasukawa of Japan, Warknesh Kidane, Misiker Mekonnin and Bizunesh Deba of Ethiopia, and Benita Willis of Australia.

Nasukawa won the Tokyo Half Marathon in February. Kidane has a half-marathon best of 1:08:09, ran 2:26 at the Boston Marathon earlier this year and has won six medals at the World Cross Country Championships, including gold in 2003. Mekonnin won the 2010 P.F. Chang's Rock 'n' Roll Arizona Marathon and this year finished second at the Dodge Rock 'n' Roll San Diego Marathon running 2:25:21. Deba, who lives in New York, ran a stunning 2:23:31 in winning the Dodge Rock 'n' Roll San Diego Marathon in June, and Willis, who has a half-marathon PR of 1:07:55, won the World Cross Country title in 2004.

The race course has undergone some minor changes to accommodate this year's record field of more than 21,000 entrants, some 3,000 participants larger than a year ago. The race gets underway on Sunday at 8:00 am on the Ben Franklin Parkway in front of the PhiladelphiaArt Museum, where it will also finish.

Event weekend kicks off Friday, September 16 with a free two-day Health & Fitness Expo at the PhiladelphiaConvention Center, which is open to the public. The Expo, where all participants pick up their race number, will feature over 100 exhibitors with free samples, the latest in running apparel and a full schedule of interactive clinics. The event concludes Sunday afternoon with a finish line festival and concert headlined by rock star Bret Michaels.

From Couch to Finish Line: LA Roadrunners Training Program for 2012 Honda LA Marathon

More than 2,000 expected for 26-week program; 99 percent finish rate & choice of three locations for first-time participants & experienced racers

LOS ANGELES - (September 11, 2011) - For those with aspirations of crossing the finish line at the 2012 Honda LA Marathon, it's time to get moving. The LA Roadrunners kicked off their 26-week training schedule on Saturday, September 10, with a program that promises to be bigger and better than ever. A brand-new location in the West Valley is among the changes designed to help more than 2,000 runners get to the starting line - and the finish line - for the March 18 race.

The LA Roadrunners is the official six-month training program of the Honda LA Marathon, designed to serve a variety of runners (and walkers) - from first-time marathoners to veteran racers. During the six months leading up to the race, participants will take part in weekly group training runs led by experienced pace leaders, and benefit from a comprehensive training manual and calendar, weekly guest speakers, and technique & nutrition advice.

"The LA Roadrunners program is an effective and fun way for all runners to train for the 2012 race, whether it's your first marathon or your 50th," said LA Roadrunners Coach Rod Dixon, a 1972 Olympic medalist and New York City Marathon champion. "We take thousands of runners from the couch to the finish line, and help keep our trainees on track to meet their goals. Each year we see about 99% of LA Roadrunners participants who start the race cross the finish line, many of whom reach a personal best."

This year, the LA Roadrunners is building on its successful Venice Beach and Chino Hills / Inland Empire training programs and expanding into Westlake Village. Each Saturday morning, from September 10 until race weekend on March 18, 2012, runners will congregate at Westminster Avenue Elementary School (1010 Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice), Butterfield Park (17671 Mystic Canyon Drive in Chino Hills) and Westlake Village City Hall (31200 Oak Crest Drive in Westlake Village).

On September 10, the Venice program hosted an official kick-off event at 8:00am in the Westminster Avenue Elementary School parking lot, to introduce participants to LA Roadrunners and cover the week-to-week breakdown of training runs and exercises. The mini-expo included a line-up of speakers including Coach Dixon, along with a variety of booths for sponsors, local businesses and charities. Organized training runs will begin the second weekend of the program on Saturday, September 17.

The LA Roadrunners caters to participants of all experience levels. At the flagship Venice location, program participants can choose from 18 different pace groups for runners, walkers and run-walkers that range from a 7:30 per mile (in which runners would finish in less than 3 hours, 17 minutes) to a more moderate pace that will enable walkers to complete the race just under the Marathon's time limit of eight hours.

Runners can sign up for the LA Roadrunners program at the same time they register for the marathon, at www.lamarathon.com. Those who sign up for both the race and LA Roadrunners receive a substantial discount on the training program.

"The LA Roadrunners program can train even the most inexperienced runners and walkers to complete the 26.2 mile race, so we strongly encourage first-timers to come out and join us," said LA MARATHON LLC Community Relations Director Ginger Williams. "This is a great opportunity for runners from all across Los Angeles to come together to prepare for one of the most spectacular races in the country, while making new lifelong friends."

The LA Roadrunners program has successfully trained more than 50,000 runners and walkers who want the satisfaction of completing the Honda LA Marathon. This year, as a result of tremendous interest, the program is expected to serve more participants than ever - more than 2,000. But runners must sign up before the program sells out.

Thousands of runners have already signed up for the 2012 Marathon, which will once again feature the wildly successful "Stadium to the Sea" route that takes runners from Dodger Stadium to the Santa Monica Pier, with a highlight reel of sights in between: famous districts such as Chinatown and Little Tokyo; iconic areas including the Sunset Strip and Rodeo Drive; and noteworthy L.A. landmarks Walt Disney Concert Hall, Grauman's Chinese Theater, the Capitol Records Building and many more.
