Bryan Clay (Azusa Pacific 2002; Glendora, Calif.), the 2008 Olympic decathlon gold medalist, will be teaming up with the United States Olympic Committee and VisitBritain for the “Team USA: Britain Bound” program in anticipation for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Team USA: Britain Bound is an interactive program announced in August by the USOC that will take Clay and other reigning Olympic and Paralympic gold medalists on a tour of locations surrounding Great Britain.
In an effort to familiarize the athletes with the area as they continue preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games, Clay’s itinerary includes a trip to Scotland to compete in the Highland Games. Beginning today and running through September 20, among other activities, Clay will take part in the caber toss and stone put at the Highland Games, don a kilt, board the Royal Yacht Brittania and even take in some fly fishing.
The other athletes involved include Jeremy Campbell (2008 Paralympic discus and pentathlon gold medalist), Henry Cejudo (2008 Olympic wrestling gold medalist), Allison Jones (2008 Paralympic cycling gold medalist and 2006 Paralympic skiing champion), Nastia Lukin (2008 Olympic gymnastic gold medalist), Heather Mitts (2008 and 2004 Olympic soccer gold medalist) and Rebecca Soni (2008 Olympic swimming gold medalist).
Along with winning the Olympic decathlon gold medal in 2008, Clay was also the silver medalist at the 2004 Games, won the World Outdoor championship in 2005 and won the Jesse Owens award in 2008. He is a two-time World Indoor heptathlon gold medalist.
Each of the athletes involved have a separate itinerary and all of their progress can be followed at www.teamusa.org/britainbound. Specifically, updates on Clay’s experience in the program, including photos, video, Twitter feeds and facebook updates, can be seen at www.visitbritain.com/en/US/Britain-Bound-Bryan-Clay/.
