SACRAMENTO, CALIF. - Johnnye Valien (Los Angeles, Calif.) headlined the meet highlights yet again as she captured her fifth gold medal and another record on day seven of the 2011 WMA World Masters Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Valien sailed over the bar in the W85 high jump to set an American record mark of 0.84m/2-9. Earlier in the meet, she set world records in both the W85 long jump and pole vault events, and won the shot put and javelin as well.
Matthews walks to second AR of meet
In Tuesday's 10k road race walk event, Jonathan Matthews (Helena, Mont.) cruised to his second M55 American record with a time of 46:55.46.
Matthews had a decorated elite career that included three national titles and four American open records. Earlier this week, he won the M55 5,000m race walk, while setting an American record.
Bergen finishes with three golds
Kathy Bergen (La Canada, Calif.) won her last event of the competition, the W70 high jump, with a clearance of 1.25m/4-1.25. Bergen dominated the short sprints earlier in the meet with a victory in the 100m and an American record in the 200m.
"I didn't jump as well as I'd hoped," Bergen said. "I jumped 1.28m in Houston at the Senior Games, so I was hoping to duplicate that. But I was satisfied, I felt my technique was good."
Bergen is coming off a very successful 2010 campaign that resulted in five world records and one American record. She is quick to say that her favorite event is the 100m, but Bergen also loves the attitude of the jumpers.
"The high jumpers are by far, I think, the friendliest, most supportive group," she said "My husband and I started Masters track in 1994, and he was high jumping. I watched it, and they were such nice men, who really got along with each other. So I started high jumping because of that camaraderie."
Bergen, who is competing in her first ever World Masters meet, doesn't plan to stop competing anytime soon.
"The ladies who are 85 and 90, I'm going be breaking their records some day," Bergen said.
