Texas A&M Refuses to Relinquish Top Billing in Women’s Division I Rankings

NEW ORLEANS – Heading into the Big 12 Championship meet this weekend, the Texas A&M women continue their dominance in the women’s U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division I Outdoor Track and Field rankings as the Aggies are ranked No. 1 for the seventh consecutive week.

A&M, which earned 302.56 points, will face a serious test this weekend when they head to No. 23 Texas Tech for the Big 12 Championships. Among the four other Big 12 teams vying for the women’s crown are No. 6 Texas and No. 8 Baylor. The Aggies will be seeking their third straight Big 12 Outdoor title.

Coming in at No. 2 this week are the Oregon Ducks. Oregon improved two spots this week after an impressive one-two finish by Brianne Theisen and Kalindra McFadden in the women’s heptathlon at the Pac-10 Multi-Event Championships. The duo, ranked first and third nationally on the descending order list, combined to give Oregon over 60 points towards their 256.51 team point total in the rankings.

Florida State and LSU each dropped one spot this week to No. 3 and No. 4 respectively. Southern California, Texas, Arizona State, and Baylor remained unchanged in spots five through eight this week.

Ninth-ranked Virginia Tech and tenth-ranked BYU both improved one spot in the rankings to complete the women’s top ten.

Making moves this week was No. 14 Auburn, which moved up four spots, entering the women’s top 15 for the first time since the preseason rankings. No. 19 Oklahoma had the biggest jump in the rankings this week improving 21 spots after a big weekend at home from jumper TiAnca Mock and quarter-miler Leslie Cole.

No. 25 Indiana also made a big jump in the rankings moving up ten spots to No. 25. The top 25 ranking was the first of the 2009 outdoor season for the Hoosiers.

The 2009 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held June 10-13 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Oregon is this week’s top ranked men’s team.
