U.S. stars win at Qatar Super Grand Prix
U.S stars Allyson Felix, Travis Padgett, David Oliver, Reese Hoffa and Brittney Reese all won their respective events Friday at the 2009 Qatar Athletic Super Grand Prix in Doha, Qatar.
A two-time World Outdoor champion and twice an Olympic silver medalist in the women's 200 meters, Allyson Felix demonstrated her 400m prowess with her win in 50.75 seconds, which is the fastest outdoor time in the world this year. Felix, who ended the 2008 season ranked #5 in the world at 400 meters, was victorious in Doha last year in 49.83.
2008 U.S. Olympic Team relay pool member Travis Padgett was first across the line in the men's 100 meters with room to spare. Padgett, who finished fourth at the 2008 Olympic Trials and was the 100m runner-up at last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships, crossed the finish line first in 10.00 seconds. His performance equals the fastest time in the world this year by two-time Olympic bronze medalist Walter Dix set in Tallahassee, Fla., on April 11.
Defending Doha 110m hurdles champion and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist David Oliver, who posted his career best time with his 12.95-second victory here last year, was victorious again today in 13.09 seconds. Oliver's performance is the fastest in the world this year, bettering his own 13.19 clocking in Gainesville, Fla., on April 3.
Other Americans in the 110m hurdles field and their places include Antwon Hicks (2nd-13.24), Joel Brown (4th-13.37) and Dexter Faulk (5th-13.51).
In field event action, 2007 World Outdoor champion and two-time Olympian Reese Hoffa won the men's shot put with a toss of 21.64 meters/71 feet, which is the longest throw in the world this outdoor season. Hoffa defeated reigning Olympic champion Tomasz Majewski of Poland, who had a best throw of 21.22m/69-7.50. Two-time Olympic silver medalist Adam Nelson placed sixth with a best of 19.76m/64-10.
Reigning NCAA Outdoor and Olympic Trials champion Brittney Reese, who ended the 2008 campaign ranked #4 in the world, captured the women's long jump in Doha with a personal best leap of 6.99 meters/22 feet 11.25, which is the best in the world this outdoor season. Reese bettered her previous personal best of 6.95m/22-9.75 set in winning the 2008 Olympic Trials.
Finishing as the runner-up to Reese was her Olympic teammate Funmi Jimoh, who soared to her own personal best of 6.96m/22-10, which improved on her previous career best of 6.91m/22-8 set last year.
In other events, 2008 Olympic Games fourth-place finisher Damu Cherry was the runner-up in the women's 100m hurdles in 12.72 seconds, with 2004 Olympic Trials fourth-place finisher Danielle Carruthers third in 12.73. Two-time Olympic Trials qualifier Stephane Durst was the runner-up in the women's 100 meters in 11.15 seconds.
