O'Connor named Athlete of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS - Nadine O'Connor has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after breaking her own age-group world record in the women's pole vault Saturday at the California Striders Meet of Champions at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif.
A multiple-time USATF Masters Athlete of the Year, O'Connor raised her own listed W65 world record in the pole vault with her clearance of 3.13 meters/10 feet 3.25 inches. Her previous record of 3.07m/10-0.75 was set in 2008.
Elsewhere, 2008 Olympic Trials champion Brittney Reese recorded a world-leading, personal best in the women's long jump with her leap of 7.06m/23-2 in Belem, Brazil. Reese's efforts marks her as the third farthest leaping American of all-time. 2009 USA Indoor champion Dan Taylor won the men's shot put at the Elite Throwers Meet at the University of Arizona on Saturday with a world-leading, personal best heave of 21.78m/71-5.5.
Now in its eighth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.
