DREAM 1000...inspired by David Rudisha's one kilometer debut tomorrow at the Diamond League Meeting in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, I was dreamin' up a fantasy 2 1/2 lap field earlier today while slogging around the high school track in seemingly endless circles. Here's what I got (and please excuse any miscues as they were likely influenced by oxygen indebtedness) :
In lane one, Joaquim Cruz, in two, Peter Snell, in lane three, Sebastian Coe, Jim Ryun is in 4, Rudisha in 5, I left lanes 6 and 7 open for YOUR picks, while the outside lane is reserved for Rick Wohlhuter
Who's on first...errr ummm I mean who's in six and seven?

Peter Thompson Steve Cram has a 2:12.88 1000m backed by a 1:42.88 800m and 3:29.67 1500m compared with Steve Ovett's 2:15.91 1000m backed by 1:44.09 800m and 3:30.77 1500m and I agree with Ron Bowker that Cram should definitely be in the field . You'd also need to co...See More

Douglas Clark This is all hypothetical so why not expand the field to 32 in Olympics/World Championships style then have a prelim and semi to determine the finalists

Carleton 'Buck' Jones I could see Yuriy Borzakovskiy (1:42.47) lurking at the back of our 40 man pack and blowing everyone away down the stretch.

John Walker I think we need heats, quarter finals , semi finals. then the final to sort out the winner! Maybe we could get those blokes that arranged the computer fight between Marciano and Ali to do this!

Brian Sheriff Mr. Mike Fanelli - I'd place the following two great rivals: Mal Whitfield (USA) and Arthur Wint (Jamaica) in lanes 6 and 7. P.S. Mal Whitfield was coaching me in Zimbabwe in 1984... great guy and sad not much is remembered of him in USA..
