Northern California at Arcadia Invitational

I met junior triple jumper Kendal Nielsen (Bear River, Grass Valley, SJS) and her mother at the Sacramento International Airport on Friday morning. We flew down to Ontario on the same Southwest Airlines flight. I sat next to Arlene and Michael Ng, two pharmacists from Seattle, who were educated at the University of Pacific in Stockton.

I met the parents of miler Jantzen Oshier (pronounced O-sure) during the meet. He is going to Cal. Cal coaches Tony Sandoval and Amy Detmer were there. Oshier is 6-5 and has a very long stride. He reminds me of Don Bowden (Abraham Lincoln, San Jose 1954; Cal 1958), who set the national high school record of 1:52.3 in the 880 yard run. He was the first American to break the four minute mile in 1957. He was timed in 3:58.7.

Vacaville had an outstanding Saturday morning of qualifying. All three of their athletes--junior Curtis Bleasdale, discus, freshman Daria Cook, hurdles, and senior Brianna French, shot put--qualifed to go onto the evening invitational section. They also received the treasured Arcadia Invitational backpacks. French had been invited to the invitational discus field. French is a devout Morman and has just taken a visit to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Former Bulldog Cecily (Lemmon) Lew is a distance runner for BYU. I went out to lunch at Carl's Junior with head coach Mike Papadopoulos, Cook and an assistant coach.

I sat next to coach and entrepreneur Peanut Harms (El Dorado, Placerville) on the flight from Ontario to Sacramento on Sunday morning. Harms is the VP Field Sales & Marketing at VS Athletics.

Arcadia is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States, and located approximately 13 miles (21 km) northeast of downtown Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley and at the base of the San Gabriel Mountains.
