Record Setting Barringer Leads List of Division I Regional Winners

NEW ORLEANS – Colorado’s Jenny Barringer leads an impressive group of regional award winners as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced the 2009 Division I Men’s and Women’s Regional Athletes and Coaches of the Year on Monday afternoon.

Barringer shattered the women’s 1500 meter all-time collegiate-best record by running an astounding 3:59.90 at the Prefontaine Classic. The mark was her third outdoor collegiate record this season. Her 1500 meter performance broke the previous record by more than six seconds and placed Barringer in elite company as she became just the fourth female in U.S. history to break the four-minute barrier in the event.

Barringer’s two other collegiate records are in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:26.20) and the 5,000 meters (15:07.64). Though she owns the top time in all three events, she will focus on the steeple, an event she won at last year’s NCAA Outdoor Championships and in which she holds the American record.

In honor of her accomplishments this season, Barringer has been named the Mountain Region Women’s Track Athlete of the Year.

The USTFCCCA honors the top track and field athletes along with the top head coaches and assistant coaches in nine Division I regions. A total of 73 men’s and women’s student-athletes and coaches were recognized this year.
