The Wolves team is undefeated in Varsity boys and girls as well as JV girls. The JV boys team is tied for 1st with River Valley after today's win. Times tended to be slow for the course as many were running just to get the "job" done and be ready to run well in Fresno on Saturday at Clovis. Also, the low 80 degree day felt quite hot!"

Keflezighi named Athlete of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS - Meb Keflezighi has been named USA Track & Field's Athlete of the Week after setting an American record in the men's 20 km Sunday en route to winning the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in San Jose, Calif.
The 2004 Olympic silver medalist in the men's marathon, Keflezighi's 20 km split of 57 minutes 52 seconds broke Ryan Hall's previous record of 57:54 set in 2006. Keflezighi went on to win the half marathon in 1:01:00, bettering his previous personal best by 25 seconds. His half-marathon time ranks him number three all-time on the American list.
Now in its eighth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

USATF Foundation awards Elite Athlete Development Grants to nine athletes
INDIANAPOLIS - The USA Track & Field Foundation has presented Elite Athlete Development Grants to nine athletes, Foundation Executive Director Tom Jackovic and Chairman Bob Greifeld announced today.
Athletes receiving $4,000 grants include World Championships finalist Rachel Yurkovich (javelin), World Championships team members Keith Moffat (high jump) and Brandon Roulhac (triple jump), and emerging elites Jerome Miller (110m hurdles), Nicole Leach (400m hurdles), Noah Bryant (shot put), Matthew Turner (long jump), Liz Wanless (shot put) and Sheldon Battle (shot put).
"We are excited to be able to create further opportunities for Olympic hopefuls to realize their dreams," said USATF Foundation Director and two-time Olympian Ken Flax. "As an Olympian, I take particular pride in supporting our American athletes."
The USATF Foundation Elite Athlete Grant Program contributes to the pursuit of world-class performances by American post-collegiate track and field athletes. Athletes must meet minimum performance standards to be eligible and must also participate in the Win With Integrity program.
The USATF Foundation provides a means to attract and guide funds to new and innovative track and field programs with an emphasis on providing opportunities for youth athletes, emerging elite athletes and anti-doping education. The Foundation depends upon donations from its Board of Directors and from generous fans of track & field.

USATF Foundation awards Elite Athlete Development Grants to nine athletes
INDIANAPOLIS - The USA Track & Field Foundation has presented Elite Athlete Development Grants to nine athletes, Foundation Executive Director Tom Jackovic and Chairman Bob Greifeld announced today.
Athletes receiving $4,000 grants include World Championships finalist Rachel Yurkovich (javelin), World Championships team members Keith Moffat (high jump) and Brandon Roulhac (triple jump), and emerging elites Jerome Miller (110m hurdles), Nicole Leach (400m hurdles), Noah Bryant (shot put), Matthew Turner (long jump), Liz Wanless (shot put) and Sheldon Battle (shot put).
"We are excited to be able to create further opportunities for Olympic hopefuls to realize their dreams," said USATF Foundation Director and two-time Olympian Ken Flax. "As an Olympian, I take particular pride in supporting our American athletes."
The USATF Foundation Elite Athlete Grant Program contributes to the pursuit of world-class performances by American post-collegiate track and field athletes. Athletes must meet minimum performance standards to be eligible and must also participate in the Win With Integrity program.
The USATF Foundation provides a means to attract and guide funds to new and innovative track and field programs with an emphasis on providing opportunities for youth athletes, emerging elite athletes and anti-doping education. The Foundation depends upon donations from its Board of Directors and from generous fans of track & field.

NEW ORLEANS (USTFCCCA.org) – Oregon’s Ashton Eaton and Galen Rupp and Oklahoma State’s German Fernandez have all been named finalists for the inaugural The Bowerman, which will recognize annually the most outstanding collegiate men’s track and field athlete, The Bowerman Advisory Board announced on Tuesday. The Bowerman is administered by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The three men’s finalists for the 2009 award were selected by The Bowerman Advisory Board, which is comprised of NCAA collegiate administrators, national and regional media personnel, and track & field statisticians.
“On behalf of the entire Bowerman Advisory Board, we are very pleased with the work of the Bowerman Watch Committees and the athletes they have identified for our Inaugural Awards. Each of these athletes boasts outstanding qualifications, and they are truly the ‘cream of the crop’ in collegiate track & field,” said Herman Frazier, Chairman of the Bowerman Advisory Board and Senior Associate Athletic Director at Temple University.
The 2009 announcement and presentation of The Bowerman will be held on December 16th in conjunction with the 2009 USTFCCCA Convention at the JW Marriott Grande Lakes in Orlando, Florida. The three men’s finalists will be invited for the announcement and presentation of The Bowerman.
“I would also like to thank the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for having the foresight to create such a prestigious award for collegiate track & field athletes. The Bowerman is an excellent way to recognize the talented young men and women who participate in track & field, as well as to honor one of the all-time great track & field coaches, Bill Bowerman,” added Frazier.
The Bowerman is named in honor of track and field pioneer Bill Bowerman, who served the sport of track and field in numerous ways, including his leadership in the USTFCCCA predecessor organization the National Collegiate Track Coaches Association, and his contributions to NCAA track and field and the running community as a whole.
“Our family is greatly honored by this distinguished award that gives recognition to a student-athlete for their abilities and performance in track and field,” said Barbara Bowerman, wife of the late Bill Bowerman. “Bill always felt that the achievements of the athletes on the athletic fields should be recognized in a most meaningful way.”
A ballot consisting of the three finalists will be sent in early November to The Bowerman Voters who will rank their selections for The Bowerman. Fans and USTFCCCA members also will be able to vote online as part of the national voting process.
An independent firm will collect and tabulate the votes to determine the men’s 2009 winner of The Bowerman.

ASHTON EATON – UNIVERSITY OF OREGON
Eaton, a junior from Bend, Ore., was undefeated in the combined events during the 2009 NCAA indoor and outdoor track & field seasons. The Duck standout won two NCAA titles, took the Pac-10 outdoor decathlon title and finished second in the men’s long jump at the Pac-10 outdoor championships. Eaton cracked the 8,000 point barrier in all three collegiate decathlon competitions during the outdoor season, with a season-best total of 8,214 points (wind-aided) at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. He also posted a season-best of 6,174 points in the indoor heptathlon. Eaton was honored as the 2009 USTFCCCA Men’s Division I Indoor National Field Athlete of the Year and the 2009 USTFCCCA Men’s Division I Outdoor National Field Athlete of the Year.
GERMAN FERNANDEZ – OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY
Freshman German Fernandez made a name for himself on the collegiate track & field scene as he went undefeated at distances of 3,000 meters or less during the 2009 indoor and outdoor seasons, winning the NCAA Division I outdoor national title in the 1,500 meters with a season-best time of 3:39.00. Fernandez won Big 12 Conference indoor titles in the one mile and 3,000 meter races, setting a new indoor collegiate record and a new junior world record of 3:55.02 in the one mile race. He added two more Big 12 titles to his name when he won outdoor conference titles in the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters. The Riverbank, Calif. native was named the 2009 USTFCCCA Men’s Division I Indoor Midwest Region Track Athlete of the Year and the 2009 USTFCCCA Men’s Division I Outdoor Midwest Region Track Athlete of the Year.
GALEN RUPP – UNIVERSITY OF OREGON
Rupp, the 2009 USTFCCCA Men’s Division I Indoor National Track Athlete of the Year and the 2009 USTFCCCA Men’s Division I Outdoor National Track Athlete of the Year, won NCAA Division I Indoor national titles in the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters. Rupp earned a third indoor national title when he anchored the winning Distance Medley Relay squad to lead the Ducks to their first-ever indoor national team title. Rupp was at it again during the outdoor campaign, winning NCAA Division I Outdoor national titles in the 5,000 meters and 10,000 meters. The most decorated athlete in Oregon history, Rupp won the Pac-10 outdoor title in the 10,000 meters and finished second in the 1,500. Rupp set a new American and collegiate record in the indoor 5,000 meters this season with a time of 13:18.12. He also anchored Oregon’s 4xMile relay squad to a new collegiate record at the Oregon Twilight meet.

Cross country: Glacier Peak freshman in a class by herself
SNOHOMISH — Amy-Eloise Neale is a five-time national champion. She is poised to become a four-time state cross-country winner. She is predicted to be a four-time state track winner — in perhaps two events. She is hailed as one of the greatest teenage distance runners this state has seen.
Cross-country: Doing it his way
Joe Newton hasn't changed much during the more than 50 years he's spent coaching runners at York High School. He has 26 state titles, 41 state trophies and plenty of memories to show for it.

Seaman, Vaill win national race walk titles
Two-time Olympian Tim Seaman and 2004 Olympian Teresa Vaill were the respective men's and women's winners Saturday at the 2009 USA 5 km Race Walk Championships in Kingsport, Tenn.
Seaman (Imperial Beach, Calif.), who won his 11th consecutive USA Indoor 5,000m race earlier this year in Boston, had little difficulty in crossing the finish line first Saturday in 21 minutes 35 seconds. Seaman now owns 37 national race walk titles at a variety of distances indoors, outdoors and on the roads. Earlier this year, he won his sixth 20 km national title at the 2009 USA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Dave McGovern (Locust Valley, N.Y.) was the runner-up in 23:57, with Chris Schmid (Wooster, Ohio) finishing third in 25:3, with Omar Nash (Cincinnati, Ohio) placing fourth in 25:31.
Earlier this year, Teresa Vaill (Gainesville, Fla.) won her fourth-career USA 20 km title, and on Saturday she won the women's 5 km national crown by finishing first in 23 minutes 19 seconds. Other top finishers included Bobbi Chapman of Charleston, W.V. (2nd-24:52), Susan Randall of Beaver Creek, Ohio (3rd-26:11) and Maryanne Daniel of Clinton, Conn. (4th-27:08).

Keflezighi sets U.S. 20 km record at Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon
On his way to winning the 2009 Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon Sunday in San Jose, Calif., 2004 Olympic marathon silver medalist Meb Keflezighi set a pending American 20 km road record.
Keflezighi, who improved his personal best by 25 seconds in winning the half marathon in 1:01:00, hit the 20 km mark in 57:52, which bettered Ryan Hall's previous American record of 57:54 set in 2006.
"The other runners looked like they were struggling with the 4:30 pace early on, so I decided to leave the pack and go on my own," said Keflezighi, who pulled away from the pack just after mile 3. "It was a great atmosphere out there today; I just wanted to maintain a solid pace through 10 miles and then see what I had left. I ran a personal best by 25 seconds and I'm 34, so I am very excited with my performance."
Keflezighi's half-marathon performance ranks him number three all-time on the American list for a record standard course. He sits behind only Mark Curp's 1:00:55 from 1985, and Ryan Hall's American record 59:43 from 2007.
The women's race was won by Belainesh Gebre of Ethiopia who crossed the line in 1:11:24. Bay Area resident Magdalena Lewy-Boulet, who made her Olympic debut for the U.S. in Beijing, finished a close second with a new personal best of 1:11:46. Her previous half-marathon best of 1:11:47 was set in 2008.

INDIANAPOLIS - For the first time, track and field fans have the opportunity to help select the 2009 Jesse Owens Awards winners. The honors going to the sport's top athletes of the year is selected by a vote of the media; this year, an online fan balloting will account for 10 percent of the votes.

Abdirahman, Paulson win USA titles in Twin Cities
MINNEAPOLIS - Abdi Abdirahman (Tucson, Ariz.) won his fourth USA 10 Mile title and Ilsa Paulson (New York, N.Y.) won her first ever U.S. title in winning the USA Women's Marathon Championship Sunday as the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon hosted the championships for the USA Women's Marathon, Masters Marathon and Men's 10 Miles. Abdirahman ran 46:35 for his second championship of the year as Paulson ran 2:31:49 to become the second youngest women to ever win the women's marathon crown.
The men's 10 mile championship started the day of racing with Max King (Bend, Ore.) leading Abdirahman, Anthony Famiglietti (Knoxville, Tenn.), a trio of Minneapolis-based Team USA Minnesota teammates Jason Lehmkuhle, Josh Moen and Patrick Smyth through the first mile in 4:31.
At two miles, Moen took charge of the pace with Abdirahman, Famiglietti, Lehmkuhle, Smyth and King close behind. An uphill third mile covered in 4:38 saw Moen and Abdirahman open a 10 meter gap on the rest of the field and by four miles the gap had grown to 40 meters.
As they passed five miles in 22:56, Abdirahman had a five meter lead on Moen, while Smyth and Lehmkuhle were about 75 meters back. Though the pace slowed to 4:52 for the sixth mile, Abdirahman's lead grew slightly but the 4:53 seventh mile saw Moen catch and pass Abdirahman, taking a small lead.
At eight miles, Abdirahman moved to the front for the final time but Moen fought to stay in contact. Over the final mile Abdirahman managed to pull clear of Moen to win his second U.S. title of the year by three seconds.
Moen's team USA Minnesota teammates Smyth and Lehmkuhle took the next two spots, running 47:09 and 47:16 respectively while Ian Burrell (Flagstaff, Ariz.) took fifth in 47:41.
The championship offered $25,000 in total prize money with the Abdirahman earning $10,000 for the win.
Women's Marathon
In the women's marathon championship, four-time Olympian Colleen De Reuck was the overwhelming pre-race favorite but had company early in the race from Paulson, Nicole Blaesser (Seattle, Wash.) and local favorites Kristin Nicolini and Michelle Frey.
At halfway, De Reuck had an 18 second lead on Paulson and by 20 miles, with her lead growing to 40 seconds, De Reuck looked to be on her way to a both the open and masters women's crown.
As Paulson rallied, she managed to catch De Reuck and made her move to the lead at 24 miles, steadily pulling away to a 48 second win. De Reuck's 2:32:37 second-place performance was also good for the women's masters title and a pending American record for the 45- 49 age-group.
Nicolini managed to hold on for third, running 2:35:06 in her debut at the distance. Also in her debut, Blaesser took fourth in 2:35:09 as Sally Meyerhoff (Eugene, Ore.) rounded out the top-five in 2:35:49.
The women's marathon featured $72,500 in prize money with Paulson taking home $25,000 for the win.
Masters Marathon
The men's masters championship saw 2007 champion Tracy Lokken (Marquette, Mich.) reclaim the title, dominating the field with a 2:22:34 performance to finish 3:07 ahead of Carl Rundell (Birmingham, Mich.). Robert Weiner (Evergreen, Colo.) was third in 2:27:09.
Susannah Beck (Brunswick, ME) finished as second masters woman behind De Reuck in 2:43:18 and Mary Coordt (Elk Grove, Calif.) was third in 2:45:00.
The USA Masters Marathon Championships paid over $50,000 in prize money with the overall men's and women's masters champions earning $7,500 each.
Olympic Trials qualifying begins
The women's marathon championships was also be the first and only day in 2009 for women to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials with 29 women running 2:46:00 or better.
The open men's race saw five men run 2:19:00 or faster to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Trials, including Jason Hartmann (Boulder, Colo.) who won the overall title in 2:12:09. Lists of both men's and women's 2012 qualifiers will be maintained at www.usatf.org/groups/RoadRunning/elite/.

The USA Men's 10 Mile Championships and the USA Women's Marathon Championship and were the ninth stops for men and women respectively on the 2009 USA Running Circuit (USARC).

Abdirahman, Paulson win USA titles in Twin Cities
MINNEAPOLIS - Abdi Abdirahman (Tucson, Ariz.) won his fourth USA 10 Mile title and Ilsa Paulson (New York, N.Y.) won her first ever U.S. title in winning the USA Women's Marathon Championship Sunday as the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon hosted the championships for the USA Women's Marathon, Masters Marathon and Men's 10 Miles. Abdirahman ran 46:35 for his second championship of the year as Paulson ran 2:31:49 to become the second youngest women to ever win the women's marathon crown.
The men's 10 mile championship started the day of racing with Max King (Bend, Ore.) leading Abdirahman, Anthony Famiglietti (Knoxville, Tenn.), a trio of Minneapolis-based Team USA Minnesota teammates Jason Lehmkuhle, Josh Moen and Patrick Smyth through the first mile in 4:31.
At two miles, Moen took charge of the pace with Abdirahman, Famiglietti, Lehmkuhle, Smyth and King close behind. An uphill third mile covered in 4:38 saw Moen and Abdirahman open a 10 meter gap on the rest of the field and by four miles the gap had grown to 40 meters.
As they passed five miles in 22:56, Abdirahman had a five meter lead on Moen, while Smyth and Lehmkuhle were about 75 meters back. Though the pace slowed to 4:52 for the sixth mile, Abdirahman's lead grew slightly but the 4:53 seventh mile saw Moen catch and pass Abdirahman, taking a small lead.
At eight miles, Abdirahman moved to the front for the final time but Moen fought to stay in contact. Over the final mile Abdirahman managed to pull clear of Moen to win his second U.S. title of the year by three seconds.
Moen's team USA Minnesota teammates Smyth and Lehmkuhle took the next two spots, running 47:09 and 47:16 respectively while Ian Burrell (Flagstaff, Ariz.) took fifth in 47:41.
The championship offered $25,000 in total prize money with the Abdirahman earning $10,000 for the win.
Women's Marathon
In the women's marathon championship, four-time Olympian Colleen De Reuck was the overwhelming pre-race favorite but had company early in the race from Paulson, Nicole Blaesser (Seattle, Wash.) and local favorites Kristin Nicolini and Michelle Frey.
At halfway, De Reuck had an 18 second lead on Paulson and by 20 miles, with her lead growing to 40 seconds, De Reuck looked to be on her way to a both the open and masters women's crown.
As Paulson rallied, she managed to catch De Reuck and made her move to the lead at 24 miles, steadily pulling away to a 48 second win. De Reuck's 2:32:37 second-place performance was also good for the women's masters title and a pending American record for the 45- 49 age-group.
Nicolini managed to hold on for third, running 2:35:06 in her debut at the distance. Also in her debut, Blaesser took fourth in 2:35:09 as Sally Meyerhoff (Eugene, Ore.) rounded out the top-five in 2:35:49.
The women's marathon featured $72,500 in prize money with Paulson taking home $25,000 for the win.
Masters Marathon
The men's masters championship saw 2007 champion Tracy Lokken (Marquette, Mich.) reclaim the title, dominating the field with a 2:22:34 performance to finish 3:07 ahead of Carl Rundell (Birmingham, Mich.). Robert Weiner (Evergreen, Colo.) was third in 2:27:09.
Susannah Beck (Brunswick, ME) finished as second masters woman behind De Reuck in 2:43:18 and Mary Coordt (Elk Grove, Calif.) was third in 2:45:00.
The USA Masters Marathon Championships paid over $50,000 in prize money with the overall men's and women's masters champions earning $7,500 each.
Olympic Trials qualifying begins
The women's marathon championships was also be the first and only day in 2009 for women to qualify for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials with 29 women running 2:46:00 or better.
The open men's race saw five men run 2:19:00 or faster to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Trials, including Jason Hartmann (Boulder, Colo.) who won the overall title in 2:12:09. Lists of both men's and women's 2012 qualifiers will be maintained at www.usatf.org/groups/RoadRunning/elite/.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Alexandra Kosinski’s second place finish and Matthew Centrowitz’ fourth-place run led Oregon’s contingents at the fourth annual Bill Dellinger Invitational, held Friday under mostly sunny conditions at the Springfield Country Club.
The Dellinger also marked the Oregon debut of heralded freshman Jordan Hasay, who did not disappoint in a sixth-place run as the Duck women’s No. 2 finisher. Overall, the women of Oregon placed five runners among the top 15, while the men had three among the top 11.
“It was a good effort on the guys’ side for so early in the season,” said Oregon Associate Athletic Director Vin Lananna. “We have a good team, but they’ll have to progress with the season. They’ll have to step up, especially the underclassmen. Danny (Mercado) and Matthew (Centrowitz) both did a good job. In cross country, the first race is hard. We’ll be ready for the regionals, nationals, and Pac-10s.
“Jordan Hasay did a great job for a freshman,” said Lananna. “She followed the race and she’ll be even better later in the season. We have a lot of good pieces and it all really comes down to putting them together.”
Women’s 5,000 Meters
Placing five runners in the top nine, No. 5 Villanova made a strong statement by winning the Bill Dellinger Invitational with 22 points.
No. 2 Oregon came in second with 41 points, while No. 14 Baylor followed with 86. Texas-El Paso took fourth with 109 points and Colorado State rounded out the top five teams with 131.
Villanova junior Sheila Reid won the race with a time of 16:22.92, as she kicked just enough at the end to edge Oregon’s Alexandra Kosinski, who crossed the line in 16:25.75.
“I went to pass (Reid) but she had one more little gear,” Kosinski said.
Running unattached, Tara Erdmann finished in third in 16:29.51 with Villanova All-American Amanda Marino fourth in 16:30.76 and the Wildcats’ Nicole Schappert in fifth in 16:33.82.
Jordan Hasay, the heralded rookie from Arroyo Grande, Calif., thrilled the crowd with a sixth-place finish in 16:39.71 and was the top freshman in the field.
“It was exciting wearing the Oregon uniform for the first time,” said Hasay. “After two miles, everyone took off and split. It was a good effort on our side. We’ve been training really hard. It’s a huge PR for me.”
The Ducks also counted top-15 finishes from senior Lauren Zaludek (12th, 16:59.83), sophomore Claire Michel (13th, 17:02.53) and senior Nicole Blood (15th, 17:09.60).
Just more than three minutes into the race, Kosinski and Blood paced the lead group through the first kilometer.
After the second kilometer, Kosinski and Blood remained in front with Hasay nipping at their heels in third and UTEP’s Risper Kimaiyo in fourth. The leaders finished the first mile at 5:19.
At the halfway mark of the race, Villanova had five runners in the top 12, Oregon had five runners in the top 15 and Baylor had five runners in the top 30.
Almost 13 minutes into the race, with one lap to go, three Villanova runners were in the front four with Kosinski also in the mix.
“We have been training really hard,” said Kosinski. “This race showed us where our weaknesses are and what we need to work on as a team.”
Men’s 8,000 Meters
Alabama’s Tyson David and Julius Bor finished first and second overall and the No. 9-ranked Crimson Tide took the team title with 53 team points.
David crossed the finish line in 23:37.71 while Bor followed in 23:38.38. David’s time ranked as the eighth-fastest in course history, while Bor checks in at No. 10.
No. 12 Brigham Young, led by Miles Batty’s 23:39.61 showing which was good for third overall, placed second with 63 team points and No. 1 Oregon took third overall with 71 team points, led by Matthew Centrowitz’s fourth-place finish in 23:39.87. No. 8 Portland finished just two points behind Oregon for fourth and Villanova placed fifth with 99 points.
“The first race is always a rush,” Centrowitz said. “I know we’re all confident that we’ll bounce back. I learned as a team everyone has bad days but you’ve just got to go with it as long as we move forward and we just get back to it at practice.”
The Ducks also saw a solid performance from junior Danny Mercado, who finished eighth in 23:44.40, while sophomore Luke Puskedra placed 11th in 23:53.96. Junior A.J. Acosta (23rd, 24:16.50) and senior Diego Mercado (25th, 24:18.77) rounded out Oregon’s scoring.
After the first lap, the Ducks had five runners in the first 20 with Puskedra, Kenny Klotz and Danny Mercado pacing the lead pack.
The leaders finished two miles in 9:24 with Portland’s Alfred Kipchumba taking a small advantage.
Alabama pushed ahead 12 minutes into the race, leading Oregon, BYU and Portland at the halfway point. The Crimson Tide’s Bor was the lead runner.
The lead pack was 20-plus runners deep and four wide coming down the stretch at the end of the second lap. The three mile time for the leaders was 14:08.
Heading into the final lap, Puskedra and Kipchumba paced the pack, but Alabama had four runners in the lead group. Batty joined the top three alongside Kipchumba and Puskedra heading into the final half mile.
In the final 400 meters, David and Bor pulled ahead to claim the top two spots, as Batty charged hard for third.

USATF announces National Track & Field Hall of Fame Finalists
INDIANAPOLIS - USA Track & Field on Friday announced the finalists for the "Class of 2009" for the National Track & Field Hall of Fame.
In conjunction with USATF's 2009 Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, this year's Hall of Fame Inductions will take place Saturday, December 5, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Starting in 2003 the Hall of Fame Steering Committee and Board of Directors modernized the screening, nomination and voting processes, creating four categories in which individuals may be voted into the Hall of Fame. Those categories are: Modern athletes, retired 5 to 25 years; Veteran athletes, retired more than 25 years; Coaches; and Contributors. Each category has its own selection committee that chooses the finalists from a list of nominees. Members of the selection committees examine the nominations and evaluate their merit based on objective criteria. This year's election will include the three categories seen below.
Elections for Modern and Veteran athletes are held each year. Beginning in 2005, elections for Coaches are held in odd numbered years, with Contributors elections in even numbered years. Hall of Fame inductees, members of the National Track & Field Hall of Fame Board and Committees and members of the media comprise the National Track & Field Hall of Fame electorate.

USATF announces National Track & Field Hall of Fame Finalists
INDIANAPOLIS - USA Track & Field on Friday announced the finalists for the "Class of 2009" for the National Track & Field Hall of Fame.
In conjunction with USATF's 2009 Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, this year's Hall of Fame Inductions will take place Saturday, December 5, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Starting in 2003 the Hall of Fame Steering Committee and Board of Directors modernized the screening, nomination and voting processes, creating four categories in which individuals may be voted into the Hall of Fame. Those categories are: Modern athletes, retired 5 to 25 years; Veteran athletes, retired more than 25 years; Coaches; and Contributors. Each category has its own selection committee that chooses the finalists from a list of nominees. Members of the selection committees examine the nominations and evaluate their merit based on objective criteria. This year's election will include the three categories seen below.
Elections for Modern and Veteran athletes are held each year. Beginning in 2005, elections for Coaches are held in odd numbered years, with Contributors elections in even numbered years. Hall of Fame inductees, members of the National Track & Field Hall of Fame Board and Committees and members of the media comprise the National Track & Field Hall of Fame electorate.

ESPN The Magazine's inaugural “Body Issue,” on newsstands Friday, Oct. 9, will feature nearly 80 athletes from a variety of sports in a celebration and exploration of the athletic form. The issue honors athletes of diverse shapes, sizes, genders and races within the boundaries of taste and frontiers of creativity upon which ESPN The Magazine and ESPN have built their reputations. It is a testament to the work the athletes do, the effort they exert and the price they sometimes pay in reliance on their most important asset – their bodies.
Features in the Body Issue explore the athletic form, inside and out – literally. Body Issue editorial topics include: the largest genetic test of current and former athletes to examine their genetic mapping, athletes’ use of sexuality to promote themselves, a first-hand look at an athlete’s ACL surgery, insuring the athletic body and what video game companies know about the athletic body and the process they go through to create the video game representation of star athletes.

Twin Cities host top U.S. distance athletes this weekend
INDIANAPOLIS - The top long distance runners in the U.S. will toe the line this Sunday as the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon plays host to the championships for the USA Women's Marathon, Masters Marathon and Men's 10 Miles.
Abdi Abdirahman (Tucson, Ariz.) will return to the Twin Cities to seek his fourth USA title at 10 miles but will face a strong field that includes this year's USA 15 km champion Anthony Famiglietti (Knoxville, Tenn.). Abdirahman and Famiglietti will face a field that includes Mohamed Trafeh (Flagstaff, Ariz.) and local favorite Jason Lehmkuhle (Minneapolis, Minn.), the second and third place finishers at the 2009 USA 20 km championships last month in New Haven, Conn.
The championship will offer $25,000 in total prize money with the champion earning $10,000.
Women's Marathon
Four-time Olympian Colleen De Reuck leads both the open and masters women's field Sunday. The 2004 Olympic Trials Marathon Champion, De Reuck recently won the USA Women's 20 km Championships and will lead a field of 30 women who competed in the 2008 Olympic Trials Marathon, which includes 2009 USA 25 km champion Sally Meyerhoff (Eugene, Ore.) and local favorite Kristin Nicolini (Minneapolis, Minn.).
The women's marathon will feature $72,500 in prize money with $25,000 going to the champion.
Masters Marathon
For the 19th consecutive year, the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon hosts the USA Masters Marathon Championship featuring the return of defending men's champion Dennis Simonaitis (Draper, Utah). Simonaitis will face 2009 USA Masters Half Marathon and 15 km champion Paul Aufdemberge (Redford, Mich.).
Racing De Reuck for the masters women's title will be defending champion Susan Empey (Mercer Island, Wash.) and 2008 runner-up Meghan Arbogast (Corvallis, Ore.).
The USA Masters Marathon Championships will feature over $50,000 in prize money with the overall men's and women's masters champions earning $7,500 each.
Olympic Trials qualifying begins
The women's marathon championships will also be the first and only day in 2009 for women to qualify for the 2012 US Olympic Trials with a 2:46:00 or better. The men's championships held here last year saw ten men take advantage of the first opportunity to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Trials; another 38 men have qualified during 2009. Lists of both men's and women's 2012 qualifiers will be maintained at www.usatf.org.
About the USARC
The USA Men's 10 Mile Championships and the USA Women's Marathon Championship will be the ninth stop for men and women respectively on the 2009 USA Running Circuit (USARC).
The USARC is a USA Track & Field road series featuring USA Championships from one mile to the marathon, which attracts the best U.S. distance runners. The 2009 USARC has ten events each for men and women. Magdalena Lewy Boulet (Oakland, Calif.) currently leads the women's standings with 49 points, while Famiglietti leads the men with 49 points.
The first ten U.S. runners earn points at each USARC race (15 for first, 12 for second, 10 for third, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1), with a final $12,500 grand prix purse ($6,000, $4,000, and $2,500) for the top three men and women point scorers overall. The USARC points at the USA Marathon Championships will be doubled.
The mission of the USA Running Circuit is to showcase, support, and promote U.S. runners. Since its inception in 1995, the USARC and its races have provided over $6 million dollars to U.S. distance runners.

The 2004 Olympic Trials Marathon Champion, De Reuck recently won the USA Women's 20 km Championships and will lead a field of 30 women who competed in the 2008 Olympic Trials Marathon, which includes 2009 USA 25 km champion Sally Meyerhoff (Eugene, Ore.) and local favorite Kristin Nicolini (Minneapolis, Minn.).
The women's marathon will feature $72,500 in prize money with $25,000 going to the champion.
Masters Marathon
For the 19th consecutive year, the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon hosts the USA Masters Marathon Championship featuring the return of defending men's champion Dennis Simonaitis (Draper, Utah). Simonaitis will face 2009 USA Masters Half Marathon and 15 km champion Paul Aufdemberge (Redford, Mich.).
Racing De Reuck for the masters women's title will be defending champion Susan Empey (Mercer Island, Wash.) and 2008 runner-up Meghan Arbogast (Corvallis, Ore.).
The USA Masters Marathon Championships will feature over $50,000 in prize money with the overall men's and women's masters champions earning $7,500 each.
Olympic Trials qualifying begins
The women's marathon championships will also be the first and only day in 2009 for women to qualify for the 2012 US Olympic Trials with a 2:46:00 or better. The men's championships held here last year saw ten men take advantage of the first opportunity to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Trials; another 38 men have qualified during 2009. Lists of both men's and women's 2012 qualifiers will be maintained at www.usatf.org.
About the USARC
The USA Men's 10 Mile Championships and the USA Women's Marathon Championship will be the ninth stop for men and women respectively on the 2009 USA Running Circuit (USARC).
The USARC is a USA Track & Field road series featuring USA Championships from one mile to the marathon, which attracts the best U.S. distance runners. The 2009 USARC has ten events each for men and women. Magdalena Lewy Boulet (Oakland, Calif.) currently leads the women's standings with 49 points, while Famiglietti leads the men with 49 points.
The first ten U.S. runners earn points at each USARC race (15 for first, 12 for second, 10 for third, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1), with a final $12,500 grand prix purse ($6,000, $4,000, and $2,500) for the top three men and women point scorers overall. The USARC points at the USA Marathon Championships will be doubled.
The mission of the USA Running Circuit is to showcase, support, and promote U.S. runners. Since its inception in 1995, the USARC and its races have provided over $6 million dollars to U.S. distance runners.

The 7th annual Yolo County Championships will begin with the community 2 mile race at 8:00 a.m. at Muller Vineyards this Saturday, Oct. 3rd. Perfect weather and running conditions are predicted and a mix of top area high school, junior high and community runners will run in one of 13 races over the course of the morning. This meet has featured state champions and teams that have competed and won section and state championships. Last year’s meet saw a new meet record in the varsity boys 5K set by top state runner Garrett Seawell of Woodcreek High School in 16:37 while the girls record on the 5K course was set by area “great” Laurynne Chetelat of Davis Senior High School (2007) in a time of 19:38.
34 high schools and 8 junior highs plan to attend and compete in this year’s Fleet Feet of Davis and Puma Running and Racing sponsored event. State meet announcer Keith Conning will be on hand to identify many of the finishers and provide color commentary while such notable programs as Carondelet, Christian Brothers, Del Campo, El Camino, Folsom, Franklin, Granite Bay, Jesuit, Oakmont, Placer, Sheldon, St. Francis, St. Mary’s, Vacaville, Woodcreek and co-hosts Woodland and Davis Senior High plan to compete for bragging rights and top 10 finisher custom shoe bags and backpacks.
On the girls side, individual top honors will see Christine Bowlus of Davis, Morgan Pugh of Folsom, Breanna Lewis of Sheldon, Brooke Holt of Granite Bay, April Rosas-Willett of Granite Bay, Kristine Lozoya of Oakmont, Shannon Harcus of Placer, Karen Ramming of Woodland and Kelli Bercier of El Camino as some of the potential front runners. Top 10 finishers in the varsity races receive special commemorative Puma backpacks this year.
On the boys side Trevor Halsted of Davis Senior High, Adam Kelly-Strong of Jesuit, Chris Kigar of El Camino, Lucas Standcliff of Placer, Sebastian Charles of St. Mary’s, Nick Perez of Christian Brothers, and Matt Murphy of Woodland High promise to mix it up looking for top finishes and a shot at Seawell’s record.
Parking is always a challenge so runners for the community race and fans are encouraged to arrive early! The schedule follows. Please see attached map.
