Daveed Diggs (born January 24, 1982 in Oakland, California) is an American actor and rapper. Diggs is an alum of Brown University, from which he graduated from in 2004. He was originally recruited for his track skills but eventually got a degree in theater. [1][2]
In his Broadway debut in 2015, Diggs originated the roles of Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette in the musical Hamilton. In his role of Marquis de Lafayette, he has one of the fastest rap solos in the history of the genre. In the number "Guns and Ships," he clocks 6.3 words per second. Hamilton averages 144 words per minute and includes 20,520 words in the show, as much as 3 to 5 times as many words as other Broadway musicals.[3]
Diggs's portrayal of Thomas Jefferson is heavily influenced by Busta Rhymes.[4][5][6][7][8][9]
Before Hamilton, he was on the national tour for Marc Bamuthi Joseph's choreopoem, Word Becomes Flesh, about a nine month pregnancy, through the eyes of a young, single father.[10][11] Also, Diggs, along with Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator of Hamilton, Christopher Jackson, who plays George Washington, and Thomas Kail, the musical's director, were members of the hip-hop improv group, Freestyle Love Supreme, which Kail co-created with Miranda.[12]
He is a member of the experimental hip-hop group, clipping., which is signed onto Sub Pop, which also featured Nirvana on its label.
Diggs recently won a Grammy for his work as Thomas Jefferson and Marquis de Lafayette in the musical Hamilton.
