An e-mail from Richard Priest

A lot to get to . . . . . . . .the coaching position at Polytechnic High School, Long Beach . . . . . .in case anyone has not guessed, the school's athletic director is the head coach. . . . . .she cannot, and will not, recruit ANY student-athletes from ANY school district outside of Long Beach, as did Don Norford. . . .she or he cannot or will not recognize any potential student-athlete acquired by Poly track graduates. . . . . . . . . . in short, she or he goes by Long Beach City high school, Southern Section and CIF bylaws. . . . . .and trains whoever it is who comes out for track and field as such student-athletes naturally enter as freshmen, and so on. . . . she, or he, is a "breath of fresh air". . . . . . . .remember Poly 2014 frosh Kaelin Roberts (11.79, 23.47, 52.52) and Autumn Wright (54.74). . . . . .regardless of what March Track and Field News says. . . . . . both girls have entered Carson High School, of the L.A. City section. . . . . . .IF that is the present state of affairs and these two girls apply themselves to training, then with senior 300 meter hurdler Jeanette Paul (42.53 2015 CIF), Carson High coaches could develop a sub-3:48.00 girls 1600 meter relay team. . . . . . . . . .Clovis High graduate and 2015 Female Collegiate Female Track and Field Athlete of the 2015 collegiate track and field season (University of Oregon) Jenna Prandini is giving up her senior track season and has been signed to a PUMA shoe contract. . . . . .opening up the 2016 Diamond League international track and field season to her, giving her the proper amounts of meet competition prior to the 2016 US. Olympic Track and Field Trials. . . . . . .she can improve on er 11.92 100 meters, 22.20 200 meters and her 21-plus feet long jump marks into the trials, held this summer. . . . . . . . . .would anyone believe that Henry Thomas (Hawthorne class of 1985) still holds the U.S. high school 16 year-old record in the 100 meter dash (10.27) and the U.S. high school 17 year-old record in the same event (10.25 - the boys CIF record) . . . . . . . . . . .as a 17 year-old senior, his last race as a CIF prep in the 100 meters resulted in a 10.52 (-3.8 mps=8 mph), on a Gahr High School track that needed some serious resurfacing. .. . . . . .through age 17 he also ran FIVE non-dual meet wind legal sub-20.80 200 marks, CIF competition, an unmatched national aggragate feat. . . . . . . . . .Micheal Norman (Vista, Murrieta) has become, already, the most accomplished U.S. prep track 200 meter/400 meterr athlete in history. . . . . . . . .his 20.30 CIF boys 200 meter record designates him as number two boy, U.S. high school history. . . . . .his 45.91 400 meters ties the U.S. high school boys nationinal record. . . . . .two questions come up about him. . . . . .he has exceeded the 2016 U.S. Olympic Track and Field trials in both events. . . . . . .I gather that he would most likely enter the trials to, at least, garner a spot on the men's 1600 meter relay team. . . . . with the last five weeks of the Southern Section and CIF track and field season, grueling for all prep athletes, as it is, and possible ventures into matching the U.S. high school record in the boys 200 meters (20.13) and/or coming close to exceeding his U.S. high school record in the 400 meters. . . . . . . . .and head coach Coley Candaele having possible headaches in both relays. . . . . .Vista High's fourth fastest 100 meter returning sprinter has a 2015 best of 10.92 and, after intense reseach, I found that Luke Hicks is the second fastest 400 meter sprinter returning to 2016 CIF track. . . .with a 2015 best of 52.19. . . .. . . . can 40.14, the CIF record in the 400 meter relay and sub-3:18.00 production in the 1600 meter relay, be an arduous task of super production for Michael? . . . . . . . .,constantly? . . . . . .well, watch what happens in 2016. .  . . . . . . . . . . Micheal Norman was one of two underclass boy sprinters with outstanding 200 meter and 400 meter marks at the CIF state finals . . . . .2015 sophomore Zachary Shinnick (Damien, La Verne) ran  21.10 and 47.19. . . . . . . . . .Tara Davis (Agoura) is the fourth girl, CIF history, to have achieved a wind legal long jump of 20 feet, or farther, and a wind legal triple jump of 40 feet, or longer in the same invitational or championship meet. . . . and, at a wind legal 13.48 in the girls 100 meter hurdles (12th CIF history) . . . . .she is the only girl in CIF history to be extremely adept at two field events and a track event. . . . . . . .as briefly profiled in March 2016 Track and Field News, the Great Oak HS boys, and girls, 1600 meter runners have as good a chance (make that an opportunity of certainty) to break the U.S. high school records in the boys 4 x 1600 meters/mile (returning 1600 meter runners at 4:0648, 4:09.31, 4:09.61 and 4:23.47 from 2015 CIF) and girls 4 x 1600 meters/mile (returning girls, 1600 meters, at 4:40.34, 4:50.26, 4:55.79 and 4:56.21 from 2015 CIF).. . . .if anyone payed attention to the results of the 2016 winter meet, the certainty of both relay records would very well be captured by Great Oak HS. . . . .. . . . ..Austin Tamagno (Brea-Olinda 4:06.26y), his CIF competition mile, ranks him as the 62nd fastest boy, 1999-2015 dyestat TFX files, over all types of races. . . . . U.S. high school mile marks he can possibly(?) challenge . . . .3:58.3h (Jim Ryun 1965 U.S. high school record), 4:01.66 (Grant Fisher 2015 number two U.S. high school), 4:01.81 (Alan Webb 2001 number two high school), 4:02.4h (Rich Kimball 1974 CIF record in the boys mile) . . . . . . . . .BUT, if he wants to improve on his CIF 3200 meter pr (8:54.13), maybe run as well as 8:48, or so . . . . .would he have the mettle to ALSO run a sub-4:05 mile??????????????  within just a few weeks of a 3200 meters and a mile run . . . .his 400 meter/800 meter combination (50.89/1:52.33) seems adequate, at least. . . . . . . .for the record, on dirt tracks, Jim Ryun's best 440 yard/880 yard bests, as an East High prep, was 48.0h/1:47.7r . .  we'll see this spring . . .  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . if anyone believes that either Destiny Collins (Great Oak, Temecula 4:40.34 1600 meters) or Amanda Gehrich (Tesoro 4:39.33 1600 meters) has a definite opportunity to break 4:34.00 for 1600 meters (U.S. high school record 4:33.29 and CIF record 4:33.82) then guess again .  . . . . . .Collns' fastest 800 meter time is 2:14.29 and Gehrich's fastest 800 meter time is 2:16.75. . . . . . .Alexa Efriamson, the U.S. high school 1600 meter holder, ran a high school competition 2:04.10 and Christine Babcock, the CIF record holder for 1600 meters, ran a CIF best 800 meters in 2:10.15 . . . . . . . . . . . . COULD Micheal Norman and/or T.J. Brock (Chaminade, Canoga Park 10.34) be on track to equal, or surpass, Henry Thomas' CIF record 100 meter 10.25 CIF record????????????? . . . . . .we'll see, this spring, won't we . . . . . .. . . . .Courtney Corrin, one of the best girls, U.S. high school in the long jump over 2013-2015 (CIF 2011 in 2013 and 20-11 2015) is also ranked in the CIF girls 300 meter low hurdles 100 fastest in the event (42.41). . . . .amazing track AND field prowess. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Micheal Norman ran three non-dual meet wind legal sub-20.80 200 meter efforts in 2015 CIF track, age 17 . . . .he could realize, easily, up to six, or seven sub-20.80 200 meter efforts through his CIF prep career. . . . . . .Elena Bruckner (Valley Christian, San Jose), who has CIF shot put and discus throw bests of 53-5 1/2 and 182-8 could possibly become U.S. high school's all-time duo event performer in both events after 2016 CIF track. . . .. . . . . . . . . .Zaria Francis (Rio Mesa, Oxnard 11.31, 23.09 CIF) and Lauren Williams (Oaks Christian, Westlake 11.39, 23.16 CIF) . . . . . can either, or both, girls run a sub-11.29 mark and run a top 10 marks  CIF history 100 meter sprinter. . . . . . .or can either, or both, girls run a sub-23.00 200 meters? . . . .22.99 or faster (wind legal) in the girls 200, CIF has been recorded 18 times  . . . . . . .I have documented 25 girls in CIF history who have pole vaulted (non-dual meet) 13 feet, or higher, CIF history, with Kate Thomas (Rancho Santa Margarita) in 2015 CIF competition . . . . . . . . . . . .a CIF single season record 13 girls who ran sub-2:11.00 marks in the 800 meters return to 2016 CIF track. . . . . . . . . . . .a record eight girls, who are ranked in the CIF history, girls 100 meter hurdles, return in 2016 - Dublin (13.18), Vacaville (13.47), Agoura (13.48), Vacaville (13.84), Cathedral Catholic (13.86), El Cerrito (13.97), Redlands (14.05), Bishop O'Dowd (14.15) . . . . . . . . . . . . . Christina Chenalt (Carondolet, Concord) impoved in the girls triple jump from a March, 2016 best of 37-5 1/2. . . . .to a 2016 CIF state final wind legal best of 41-1/2. . . . .. . . .Get the following. . . . . . .2015 CIF frosh Rylee Penn (Centennial, Corona), an 800 meter runner, improved, over each of 11 races in 2015, from 2:24.51 to 2:07.43, improving in each and every race. . . . . . . . .she is the CIF frosh girls record holder in the 800 meters . .  . . . . . . ..  . . . . 2015 CIF track was the first track and field season since the 2008 CIF season where no boy triple jumpers reached a wind legal 50 feet or farther effort. . . . . . ..in the 1999-2015 dyestat TFX files, 2015 CIF season yielded 43 schools having run a sub-3:56.00 mark, the most in this 17 year period. . . . . . . . .and Long Beach Poly, holder of the U.S. high school record in this event (3:35.49 2004) and having produced 20 single-season teams in the CIF 100 fastest single-season teams (3:46.16), did not break 3:56.00 in this event in 2015 CIF . . . . . .the Southern Section schools could very well be the most productive sub-section, or state federation of schools in the U.S., having produced 100 girls in the 300 meter low hurdles, to a 43.47 mark, section history. . . . . . .. . . .  . . . . . . .I will comment on Drew Hunter's 3:58. and 3:57.81 mile runs in indoor open competition . . . . . . . as Jim Ryun's U.S. high school national record is 3:58.3h, run a well run-on dirt track, I don't believe that this high school mark is in jeoparpy, in 2016 U.S. prep track.

Vista Murrieta is returning their top 5 boys for both the 4x100 and 4x400. Luke Hicks is listed as their 2nd fastest 400 meter runner on paper because their first leg is a long/triple jumper and the other two are short sprinters, therefore they don't run the open 400. They should be able to run sub-3:17 without Michael Norman early in the CIF season. Expect them to run sub-3:11 with a healthy team at State Finals. And yes, Henry Thomas' 100 meter CIF record will go down, it is just a matter of who does it.
