SEATTLE – Valarie Allman reached 62 feet, 8 ½ inches in the 20-pound weight throw to set a Stanford record on the first day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor track and field championships Friday at University of Washington.

Allman took up the weight throw this year and has improved in each of her three meets, culminating with her toss that catapulted her over record-holder Jessica Pluth (61-11, 2003) and Maureen Onyeagbako (61-7, 2001) from third to first on Stanford’s all-time indoor performers’ list.

Allman, a junior, placed fifth in the competition to complete her first indoor season. Overall, Stanford did not earn or strengthen any possible NCAA qualification marks, though that may change Saturday. Meanwhile, the Cardinal got a runner-up finish in the women’s distance medley relay and a third from Garrett Starkey in the men’s pole vault as the team’s top placers.

Stanford’s men stand in fifth with 20 ½ points and the Cardinal women are eighth with 14 3/4 .

Allman, who was fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the discus last year, actually broke the school record twice. She went 62-2 ¼ on her second attempt and exceeded that on her fifth.

“Last year, I never even thought I would be throwing weight and now, to be sharing the honor with  Jessica Pluth is so exciting,” Allman said. “Going into the indoor season, coach (Michelle) Eisenreich was incredibly thoughtful and intentional with coming up with a plan for using the weight throw as a training tool for hammer.

“The overweight implement has definitely given me a better feel for the technique and footwork. My first indoor season has taught me a lot of valuable lessons and I can’t wait to keep the momentum going forward this outdoor season with my teammates.”

This is the fourth school record Stanford athletes have broken this indoor season, following Darian Brooks in the men’s triple jump (52-9 ¼), the men’s distance medley relay team (9:27.27) and the women’s 4x400 relay (3:33.78).
