STANFORD’S ATCHOO ADVANCES IN 1,500

Four Cardinal compete on Day Two

EUGENE, Ore. – Michael Atchoo advanced to final in the men’s 1,500 meters to highlight Stanford performances Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field.

Atchoo became the fourth Stanford middle-distance runner to reach the finals, following a trio of 800 runners who advanced on Thursday. Atchoo placed third in his semifinal heat in 3:46.23 to advance to Saturday’s final (2:18 p.m.). The top five in each heat earned automatic qualification.

Stanford had four competitors on Thursday, the second day of the four-day meet. Rebecca Mehra (4:21.63) missed qualifying for the women’s 1,500 final by 0.16 of a second, freshman Valarie Allman was 21st in the discus (158-9) and Lucas Rowley was 22nd in the men’s hammer throw (192-8).

Mehra earns a second-team All-America selection and Allman and Rowley are honorable mention. This is the first All-America honor for each.

Stanford will have four athletes competing Friday: Luke Lefebure in the men’s 800 final (5:15 p.m.), Claudia Saunders and Amy Weissenbach in the women’s 800 final (5:25 p.m.), and Joe Rosa in the men’s 5,000 final (6:10 p.m.).
