Bears Fall To Cardinal In 122nd Big Meet
Cal Performs Well Despite Losses, Inclement Weather
BERKELEY --- Despite recording a dozen combined victories and several personal records, the California track & field teams were unable to earn team titles at the 122nd Big Meet Saturday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.
On the men's side, the Bears fell to Stanford by a margin of 86-77 while the Cal women were defeated, 114-48.
Overall, California still leads the all-time men's series 69-51-2 while Stanford took a 24-12 lead in the women's series.
Cal Director of Track Tony Sandoval spoke glowingly about the meet as a whole and his teams in particular.
"We knew that it could be close on the men's side and it was. All the drama that people talk about with a dual meet, for it to come down to the last event with both teams lined up - that's what it's all about. I was proud of our kids across the board, proud that everyone gave their very, very best. There were some events that we didn't think we'd score in that we did but at the same time, Stanford did the same thing and they honored us with their best effort. I take my hat off to them...this meet is good for Cal, Stanford and for track & field."
HIGHLIGHTS
Led by a hat trick of wins for Khalfani Muhammad, the Cal men won nearly half of the Big Meet's events (9 of 19). The junior two-sport student-athlete displayed his trademark speed by closing out the team's 4x100 Meter Relay team and easily taking first in the 100 & 200 Meters.
Another highlight of the men's performances was freshman Kai Benedict's win in the 3000 Meter Steeplechase. Trailing coming into the final straightaway, Benedict was able to chase down Stanford's Steven Fahy to take the event and set a PR in the process.
Cal led Stanford in the men's standings for the bulk of the meet - even while fighting through consisten rain and slick stadium conditions - but the Cardinal slowly closed the gap with several sweeps and wins of the later running events.
Even while facing a Stanford rally, the Bears were still in contention to win as the last event event - the 4x400 Relay - was set to begin. Unfortunately for Cal, the Cardinal prevailed and secured the victory.
The three wins by the Golden Bear women came from sophomore Isabella Marten (Triple Jump), junior Christine Canning (High Jump), and Morgan Robertson (100 Meter Hurdles), with Marten's mark establishing a new outdoor PR.
