Bears Impressive At Brutus Hamilton Finale
Pair Of Cal Team Wins Stand Out From Exceptional Meet
BERKELEY --- What a way to wrap up a home schedule.
The final day of the Brutus Hamilton Open & Challenge - and the end of the 2016 home schedule for California track & field - concluded with an exceptional showing by the host Bears.
Cal earned six total victories - including three of the meet's nine special events - and both teams won the scoring portion of the meet to end the home slate on the highest of notes.
"The meet overall was a challenge because of the weather changes and how much it takes to get everything going but we had some great performances and everyone competed very well," Director of Track Tony Sandoval said after the competition. "It's been a while since both teams were able to win at Brutus Hamilton so it was great to see them all get to do a victory lap."
The highlights of Saturday's events appropriately came during the meet's Special Events, which are named after former Golden Bear track and field greats.
Senior Jonte Grant went out a winner in the Upshaw Family Long Jump after his first leap of 23-9.50 proved to be good enough to hold off the rest of the field, including runner up Yannick Roggatz from New Mexico (23-7.50 on jump three).
In the Dave Maggard Shot Put, sophomore Peter Simon (61-7.50) led a Cal sweep of the top three positions, along with runner-up Sullivan Parker (57-3.00) and third-place finisher Malik McMorris (55-5.50).
Sophomore Bethan Knights gave the Edwards Stadium fans an exciting finish in the Marilyn Davis 1500 Meters. Jockeying for front position throughout the race, Knights only secured victory after making a strong surge in the final 35 meters.
Two other athletes with Bear ties excelled on Saturday as well.
Former Cal standout, NCAA champion and Olympian Alysia Montano opened her 2016 competitive schedule by running in the Louise Romo 800 Meters - the first time she has run the event in Berkeley since 2008. Montano said she "wanted to put on a show" and she did not disappoint. Montano's consolation prize for not breaking the Edwards Stadium record of 1:59 (T. Providokhina, USSR, 1978) was running a new Brutus Hamilton meet record of 2:01.27 (besting Maggie Vessey's 2008 mark of 2:03.81) - all on her 30th birthday.
In the Don Bowden Mile, Thomas Joyce - who won the event last season and bested the top mark of Bowden himself - ran unattached and proceeded to defend his title with a time of 4:04:04.
Other Cal victories came via a triple jump sweep (Isabella Marten & Karsten Wethington) and men's discus (Aaron Russell).
