2014 State of the Sport - Part III: U.S. Race Trends

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - (July 9, 2014) - Without sounding too much like a broken record from past Running USA annual

reports, 2013 proved to be another historic and record breaking year for U.S. running events and overall finishers. Our
2014 State of the Sport - Part III: U.S. Race Trends

report clearly shows that the Second Running Boom is still going strongly as it enters its third decade. The snapshot below summarizes the key race numbers and statistics from 2013 and past years.
2013 U.S. Running Snapshot:

Females account for 10.8 million finishers nationwide (a record number) and represent the highest percentage ever reported of 57% from event fields. Males in 2013 also set a new high with more than 8 million finishers in U.S. races. Overall, there were 19,025,000 finishers in U.S. running events (another record).
The number of U.S. race finishers has increased nearly 300% since 1990, and female representation has grown from just 25% to an all-time high of 57% in 2013; see Table 1.
Total number of U.S. running events reached 28,200, another all-time high, and a 7% increase since 2012; see Table 3.
The half-marathon continues to fuel the growth of the Second Running Boom with an annual increase of 6% finishers (1.96 million, another new high) with an astounding 61% female participation.
In 2013, the 5K maintained the #1 position of all race distances with 8.3 million finishers (another record number), claiming 43% of all finishers in the U.S., while the half-marathon again held the #2 position with approximately 10% of the finishers, followed by the 10K (7.9%).

Flanagan to Headline Chicago's Rock 'n' Roll Running Festival

CHICAGO - Olympic bronze medalist Shalane Flanagan will lead two days of running at the first ever Rock 'n' Roll Running Festival in Chicago the weekend of Friday-Sunday, July 18-20. America's top female marathoner will warm-up with runners at the Rock 'n' Roll Chicago 5K on Saturday and then compete at the 6th Rock 'n' Roll Chicago Half Marathon presented by HumanaVitality on Sunday. Both events start and finish at Grant Park in downtown Chicago.

"From the Billy Joel concert on Friday night at Wrigley Field to Saturday's 5K and Sunday's half-marathon, it's going to be an incredible weekend in Chicago," said Flanagan (right, credit PhotoRun), who set her half-marathon personal record (PR) of 1 hour, 8 minutes, 31 seconds at Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans last year. "This will be my first step towards a marathon this fall and I'm excited to see where my fitness is at after my recent training in Park City. It will also be a treat for me to shakeout with the Chicago running community at the 5K on Saturday while enjoying the amazing views of the downtown skyline along the city's beautiful lakefront."

Join a Revolution: Commitment Day 2015 Registration Now Open
According to a January 2014 study by University of Scranton's Journal of Clinical Psychology, only 46% of people keep up with a New Year resolution for longer than six months. July marks the half way point in 2014. For those who have lost momentum in their New Year's Resolution to get healthy, there is no better time than the present to kick failed resolutions and to recommit for the balance of the year and make an early commitment to keep it going into 2015 by registering for
Commitment Day, which opens today.

Commitment Day, created and produced by Life Time - The Healthy Way of Life Company, was created to unite individuals in 5K Walk/Run events across the US and Canada each January 1, as they declare their commitments to healthy eating, exercise, family, respect, giving and a healthy planet. Since its inaugural year in 2013, more than 65,000 people have participated in Commitment Day.

Hastings, Landry Lead 60,000 Runners at 2014 AJC Peachtree Road Race

ATLANTA (July 4, 2014) - The 60,000 participants of the 2014
AJC Peachtree Road Race enjoyed a break in the temperatures and the humidity this Fourth of July. From American flags at the beginning and end of the course to the patriotic outfits of the participants, the 45th running of the event celebrated our nation's independence in style.

Christo Landry (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and
Amy Hastings (Providence, RI) took home victories with times of 28 minutes, 25 seconds and 32:16 respectively, each earning the title of 2014 USA 10K Champion. Landry earned his third straight USA title this year with his win and bested his 10K personal record. Hastings also set a personal record after finishing third last week at 10,000 meters in the USATF Outdoor Nationals.

"It's clear Atlanta knows how to celebrate the Fourth of July," said
Rich Kenah. "To see 60,000 strong start down Peachtree Road and end at Piedmont Park on a perfect weather day like this, is what our staff at Atlanta Track Club looks forward to every year."
