Hastings, Landry Lead 60,000 Runners at 2014 AJC Peachtree Road Race

ATLANTA (July 4, 2014) - The 60,000 participants of the 2014 AJC Peachtree Road Race enjoyed a break in the temperatures and the humidity this Fourth of July. From American flags at the beginning and end of the course to the patriotic outfits of the participants, the 45th running of the event celebrated our nation's independence in style.

Christo Landry (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Amy Hastings (Providence, RI) took home victories with times of 28 minutes, 25 seconds and 32:16 respectively, each earning the title of 2014 USA 10K Champion. Landry earned his third straight USA title this year with his win and bested his 10K personal record. Hastings also set a personal record after finishing third last week at 10,000 meters in the USATF Outdoor Nationals.

"It's clear Atlanta knows how to celebrate the Fourth of July," said Rich Kenah. "To see 60,000 strong start down Peachtree Road and end at Piedmont Park on a perfect weather day like this, is what our staff at Atlanta Track Club looks forward to every year."

Grabau, Gacek Win Red, White & Boom! TC Half Marathon

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (July 4, 2014) - Zane Grabau of Waterville and Melissa Gacek of White Bear Lake won individual victories at this morning's Red, White & Boom! TC Half Marathon and Relay. Grabau ran the 13.1 mile course in 1 hour, 12 minutes, and 53 seconds to win the men's title. Gacek clocked 1:22:17 for the women's crown, just four seconds off the current women's course record.

"It was a perfect day for it," Grabau, 26, said at the finish line. "Nice and pretty cool, not too hot and a pretty flat course. I felt good until the end, but that's how it goes. Second place pushed me along."

Daniel Peters of Minneapolis finished second in 1:13:37.

Four Top U.S. Distance Running Graduates Join B.A.A.

BOSTON - Four outstanding, female distance and middle distance runners have joined the
Boston Athletic Association, the organization has announced. Elaina Balouris, Juliet Bottorff, and Emily Lipari completed their collegiate eligibility in June, and they will reside and train in Boston, representing the B.A.A. These athletes will join Katie Matthews, another recent graduate who has been training and racing with the B.A.A. since the beginning of this year when she completed her collegiate eligibility. All four women are part of the B.A.A.'s new high performance team and will be coached by the B.A.A.'s Terrence Mahon.

Three-time U.S. Olympian Jen Rhines (2000, Sydney, 10,000 meters; 2004, Athens, marathon; and 2008, Beijing, 5,000 meters) was the first athlete to become part of the high performance team when the B.A.A. announced the launch of the program last Autumn. She is among the most accomplished female distance runners in U.S. history.

JUST RUN Turns in Highest Ever Growth Totals

MONTEREY, Calif. - Final grades are in for the 2013-14 school year and JUST RUN, the Big

Sur International Marathon's youth fitness program has received straight A's for program growth.

Now in its 10th year, the number of students participating in JUST RUN topped 17,800, a 406% increase from its first full year in 2005-06 and 56% growth over last year's total participants. Representing 140 schools in 15 states, 52 of which are in Monterey County, more than 388,500 miles were logged this year. Twenty-two of the classes earned certificates of congratulations for virtually "running across the USA" which is a main feature of the program.

"This year far outpaces any other," said Susan Love, JUST RUN program director. "We're making a positive impact in the lives of so many children."

Love attributes part of the program's growth to an increase of schools from Santa Clara County where 17 schools participated in the program. An additional 71 schools from around the country are also a part of JUST RUN, including schools in three "satellite" JUST RUN programs operating in Ohio, New York, and Florida.
