RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Jonathan Peterson won the men's 8K race and Calvin Thigpen finished third to lead the UC Davis men's cross country team to its first ever Big West Conference Championship Saturday at the UC Riverside Agricultural/Operations Course in Riverside, Calif.

Peterson's title is the second straight individual conference championship for UC Davis and the first men's individual championship in the Aggies' Division I history. The junior finished the race in a time of 23:40.2, over 17 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

"The men had decided that the conference title was a reality. We were done talking and done analyzing and it was the commitment to the goal and then the belief piece," said UC Davis head coach Drew Wartenburg. "With three guys in the top six you can't do much better than that and it just really played out over the middle and back of our lineup. The best part is now saying we accomplished a goal but we also have some things we can talk about and improve on so hopefully we can put that together for the regionals."

In addition to Peterson and Thigpen, Jonathan Sees [SR Newark, Calif. (Newark Memorial HS '06)] finished sixth overall, placing three Aggies in the top ten. UC Davis totaled 64 points to outlast UC Riverside who finished second with 66 points. UC Santa Barbara finished third with 70 points while Long Beach State came in fourth with 76 points.

Thigpen, a senior out of Santa Rosa, Calif. clocked in at 24:25.1 while Sees' sixth-place time was 24:30.7.

"For Jon (Peterson), it's the culmination of the aptitude and attitude coming together," continues Wartenburg. "He's been ready to contend for a title in his mind for two years and now the physical development and the racing savvy have all come together. He ran a very well-executed race. He was patient and focused in terms of waiting for a moment and striking and putting the race behind him and running for the win."

Axel Stanovsky [JR Everett, Wash. (Washington)] was 21st overall in a time of 24:52.2 and Matt Sartori [SR Mentone, Calif. (San Bernardino Valley College)] finished 33rd in a time of 25:22.4. Behind Sartori was freshman Kevin Griffith [FR Danville, Calif. (San Ramon Valley HS '10)] in 35th with a time of 25:25.3 while Fed Martinez [
SR Covina, Calif. (Covina HS '06)]
came in 48th overall with a time of 26:01.6.

Grayson Hough [FR Davis, Calif. (Davis HS '10)] and Nathan Strum [FR San Jose, Calif. (Pioneer HS '10)] finished 55th and 56th, respectively, to round out the UC Davis men's side.

The UC Davis women were led by Krista Drechsler's [JR Santa Barbara, Calif. (Santa Barbara HS '08)] 14th-place finish in the 6K race, which she did in a time of 21:13.4, and placed fifth overall. Caitlin Fitzgerald [SR Palmdale, Calif. (Highland HS '07)] finished 17th overall in a time of 21:20.0.

UC Santa Barbara won the women's title with 35 points to edge Cal Poly who finished second with 37 points.

"For the women, the focus today was on not being tied in good or bad ways to previous races and taking a one-race season outlook on today and trying to get individuals forward," said Wartenburg. "Weather played a bit of a factor but we talked about controlling how we respond to the conditions and not vice versa. For Krista and Caitlin to get in and around the top 15 was solid. Moving forward we'll focus on another one-meet season build on some positives from today and take it into the regional and ssee if we can't surprise some people who may have counted us out."

After Fitzgerald, freshman Alycia Cridebring [FR Pleasant Hill, Calif. (College Park HS '10) ] finished 37th in a time of 22:02.1 and was followed by Sarah Tusting [SO Benicia, Calif. (Benicia HS '09) ] who was 38th, clocking in at 22:04.2. Samantha Kearney [JR San Leandro, Calif. (Arroyo HS '08) ] finished 42nd, recording a time of 22:12.3, while Abbey Gallaher [JR Temecula, Calif. (Great Oak HS '08) ] was 45th overall.

Kristina Taylor [JR Long Beach, Calif. (Murrieta HS '08) ] was 51st while freshman Courtney Crosta [FR Roseville, Calif. (Woodcreek HS '10)] came in 56th overall. Hilary Teaford [ 1
FR Davis, Calif. (Davis HS '10)]

The cross country team continues competition Saturday, Nov. 6 as they host the Doc Adams Open at Putah Creek Reserve in Davis. The men's 8,000-meter race begins at 10 a.m. while the women's 6,000-meter race will start at 10:45 a.m.
