Bosshard, Tremblay Win Individual Titles

BOULDER - For the 12th straight year the University of Colorado men's and women's cross country teams took home the Rocky Mountain Shootout Division I Team titles and CU sophomores Joe Bosshard and Laura Tremblay added more hardware as each won the individual titles.

Bosshard led a field of 280 men's runners in the men's 8 kilometer course, crossing the finish with a personal record and the sixth fastest time in course history at 24 minutes, 44 seconds.

"I felt great," he said. "I had my first good summer of training and getting some miles in. It was nice getting the guys back out there. It is a good start to our season, but we still have a long way to go."

Bosshard, who was an All-American in the outdoor 10k this past June, had a huge lead on the field, beating teammate Andy Wacker by more than 20 seconds.

"I thought he would do it in under 25 minutes, but for him to be as fast as he was, that's great," coach Mark Wetmore said.

Wacker, who recorded his best race on the challenging course, finished in 25:05. His teammate and roommate Christian Thompson recorded a fourth-place finish (25:11) and Cameron Clayton ran to a 13th-place finish (25:47). Aric Van Halen rounded out the team scored with a 17th-place finish, crossing the line in 25:57.

"That's pretty great to be able to beat your roommate," Wetmore said in reference to Wacker and Thompson. "He (Andy) is always out there pushing hard. To move from 28 minutes to 25 minutes is really impressive."

The fourth-ranked Buffs recorded 18 points to win the Division I team title. Wyoming was the runner-up with 40 points. Adams State, the top ranked Division II men's team won the non-Division I team title with 22 points. The Grizzlies top finisher was Ryan McNiff who was third overall.

"I think we did well," Wacker said. "We had some good, tough competition. Obviously we are all teammates, but when it comes to race day, we try and beat one another so it is fun."

"Colorado is a strong program and we always want to be at the top at the end," Bosshard added. "We were missing two of our All-Americans today, but this course can take a beating on you so they just want to be careful. Our younger guys really stepped up today."

The 13th-ranked women also had an impressive performance. Tremblay had to out-sprint teammate Emma Coburn to the finish, defeating her by just one second. Tremblay's time of 20:29 ties for the 10th fastest in course history. It is also the second fastest ever on the course by a sophomore. Coburn finished in 20:30, the 12th best time on the course.

"She (Emma) was gunning for it, but it was probably good for both of us," Tremblay said. "She surged ahead the last mile and I just tried to catch her and at the very end, the last 100, we kind of just went together and I was able to pull away."

Coburn would have liked to take home the title, but said she wasn't too upset that it was her teammate who beat her out at the finish.

"If it was going to be anybody, I'm glad that it was her (Laura)," Coburn said. "If it is any of my teammates that out-kick me in the end then that is great. It means that there is somebody else to push you and if she hadn't come and kicked with me I would have run five seconds slower."

The victory was the first for Tremblay and will give her an extra confidence boost as the season starts to heat up since she can already see major improvements from last season. The last sophomore to win the race was former CU great and Olympian Jenny Barringer in 2006. That year she finished the race in 20:51.

"It felt great, it was a really good race and I think it was really good for our whole team," Tremblay explained. "When you consider our times last year, I was the fourth runner last year and I ran 21:04 and our fourth runner this year was like 20:39 or something. It's a huge jump from last year."

The top four finishers in the race were Buffs. Shalaya Kipp took third, finishing in 20:42 (the 17th best mark in course history) and Laura Thweatt was fourth (20:44). The group stayed together for most of the race, helping the Buffs record 16 points to defeat Wyoming (48) for the team title. Camille Logan rounded out the top five for the Buffs, finishing 13th overall (21:50).

"We didn't set saying that we were going to run in a pack, that wasn't the plan, but we figured that we would be close," Coburn said. "We figured that we would be within a couple of seconds of each other, we just didn't know if we would be shoulder to shoulder or 1-2-3-4 or how it would go. I knew that these three girls were going to be around me and it wasn't a surprise to have Laura Tremblay come right up to my shoulder at the end and it wasn't a surprise to have Shalaya on my shoulder the whole time. We knew that we would be together but the plan wasn't necessarily to run as a pack."

Top-ranked ASC also took the women's title in the non-Division I team scoring with 31 points and No. 8 Western State was second (38).

Despite the fact the Buffs were only scored against Division I opponents, the other teams that come have continued to provide some stiff competition for CU.

"We had some tough competition," Wetmore said. "This is our home course to know and master well. It takes some people four years before they have a race here that they are proud of. "

The next meet on Colorado's schedule is the Fort Hays Invite in Hays, Kan. on Saturday, October 9. After that meet, the varsity squad will really test their abilities against some of the best in the country at the NCAA Pre-Nationals Meet on October 16 before heading to the Big 12 Championship on Saturday, October 30 in Stillwater, Okla.
