Yale Well Represented at Home Meet
Bulldogs Continue to Drop Times, Make PRs
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Bulldogs returned from their winter recess on Saturday and once again excelled at home. Like their last meet, the Yale Intercollegiate Track Classic was not scored, but the Bulldogs proved their readiness for the indoor season. They hosted 15 teams from around the area, including Connecticut, Quinnipiac, New Haven and Sacred Heart.
In the field events, senior Reynolds Holmes (Los Angeles, Calif./Loyola High School)started the meet off strong in the long jump, placing second with a mark of 6.92m. Freshman Tommy Winger also placed eighth in the event. In the weight throw, freshman Mike Levine continued his promising freshman record with a third place finish, achieving a personal best of 16.01m, while junior David Smith placed eighth with a throw of 13.96m. The Bulldogs also took spots in the triple jump, with sophomore Yifan Chen jumping a new personal record of 13.17m to take third place and junior Samba Binagi jumping 12.14m for sixth place.
The Bulldogs’ top two contenders in the 400-meter dash, sophomore Matt Bieszard and junior Marty Evans, both shaved about two seconds off their 400-meter times at the same meet last year. Bieszard won his heat and took third overall in 49.37 seconds, closely followed by Evans in the same heat, who placed sixth overall in 49.94. In the shorter sprints, Holmes continued his day’s success by winning his heat in the preliminaries and placing seventh in the finals in 7.14 seconds. Junior Nathan Molina also qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash and finished tenth.
While most of the distance squad did not run at the meet, freshman Chris Ramsey (Glendora, Calif./Glendora High School) tacked on another excellent performance early on in his collegiate career with a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run. He crossed the line in 1:59.44, only two seconds after the winner, Mamadou Niang of Seton Hall. Senior Kevin Brown also ran close to his personal best in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:57.34 to place 10th in his heat and 15th overall.
In the 4x800 meter relay, senior Ted Galligan, senior Remi Ray, Evans, and senior Alex Harris matched last year’s performance in the event with a fifth place finish. The 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Josh Fuller, Bieszard, senior David Soiles, and Molina also finished seventh.
The Bulldogs will next compete against Dartmouth and Columbia in Hanover, N.H. on Jan. 23.
