Kimyon Broom Sets School Record in 60 Hurdles in Opening Indoor Meet
Bears Post Several Strong Efforts at Cherry & Silver Invitational

Jan. 23, 2010

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Kimyon Broom set a school record in winning the 60-meter hurdles in 8.30 seconds to lead California in its opening indoor track & field meet at the Cherry & Silver Invitational Saturday.

Broom, a senior who is the two-time defending Pac-10 champion in the 100 hurdles, finished clear of runner-up Seun Adigu, who was 0.12 seconds back in 8.42. Cal's Emani Truluck placed sixth in the final in 8.79.

The previous Golden Bear record in the 60 hurdles was 8.31 seconds and was established by Osarhiemen Omwanghe in Seattle in 2006. Broom's winning time was an NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Two other Cal athletes also reached the NCAA provisional standard Saturday, both in the pole vault. Allison Stokke cleared 13-1.50 (4.00m) to take third in the women's event, while Ryan Shuler was second in the men's competition with an effort of 17-0.75 (5.20m).

Cherrelle Garrett just missed a provisional time in the 60 meters, finishing third in 7.48 and 0.02 seconds off the mark. She was also sixth in the 200 in 24.98.

"I thought it was a nice beginning for us," head coach Tony Sandoval said. "We had a difficult week of speed training because of all the rain in the Bay Area this past week, but I thought we came through and competed well."

Several Bears made their debuts with the team, including Sofia Oberg, who placed third in the 800 meters in 2:09.83. In addition, JAsmine Joseph was fourth in the 400 (56.16), while Malaina Payton was 10th in the long jump (18-7.25).

For the men, five freshmen suited up for the first time - Tom Blocker (400, 16th, 50.65), Chad Jones (long jump, 9th, 22-5.00), Charles Saseun (60, 7.05, 13th), Hammed Suleman (long jump, 23-4.50, 4th; triple jump, 47-2.50, 11th) and Maurice Valentine Jr. (high jump, 6-6.25, 4th).

Tracey Stewart had a strong performance in the long jump with a best of 19-8.25, which was good for fourth, and Mercedes Marchbanks set a PR in the triple jump by taking second at 40-0.00. Redshirt-freshman Amanda Hunter claimed third in the triple jump at 39-4.00.

Two of Cal's heptathletes had busy days preparing for their first multi-event competition next weekend in Seattle. Michael Morrison ran 8.36 in the 60 hurdles prelims, was fourth in the pole vault (16-6.75), finished second in the long jump (23-9.50) and was 11th in the shot put (35-7.75). In addition, Kyle Mills-Bunje competed in the shot put (8th, 44-8.75), 60 hurdles (8.66, 15th), pole vault (6th, 16-0.75) and long jump (6th, 22-10.00).

Sandoval also cited notable performances by Theresa Raub in the pole vault (PR 12-7.50), Miles Palacios in the weight throw (PR 58-4.50) and Sebastian Sam in the 800 (1:51.57). Palacios' effort was an improvement of more than four feet from last year.

Cal returns to action next Friday and Saturday (Jan. 29-30) at the UW Indoor Invitational.
