Cal Sets or Ties 3 School Records at UW Invitational
Michael Morrison Automatically Qualifies for NCAA Heptathlon

Jan. 30, 2010

SEATTLE, Wash. - Michael Morrison shattered the Cal record in the heptathlon, scoring an NCAA automatic qualifying total of 5,710 points, to lead an impressive set of Golden Bear performances at the UW Indoor Invitational Saturday.

In addition to Morrison's mark, Kimyon Broom tied her Cal record with a time of 8.30 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and Chelsea Reilly set a school mark in the mile, crossing in 4:48.89. Golden Bears also posted six additional NCAA provisional qualifying marks on the day.

Morrison, a transfer from Florida where he was an All-American in the heptathlon, won two of the three events contested Saturday, clearing 16-2.75 in the pole vault and covering the 1000m in 2:46.63. He was also fourth among the heptathletes in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.38 seconds.

Morrison broke the Cal record of 5,437 set by Jonas Hallgrimsson in Seattle in 2004.

Kyle Mills-Bunje also surpassed Hallgrimsson's total with his personal-best score of 5,504 points, which was good for fourth at the UW Invite and an NCAA provisional mark. Kevin Kuechler was 15th with 4,629 points.

Reilly finished sixth in the mile, but her time of 4:48.89 set a Cal indoor record, breaking the mark of 4:49.04 set by Bridget Duffy at the MPSF championships in 2006.

Broom matched her school record in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the event in 8.30. She recorded the same time last week during her first-place finish at the Cherry & Silver Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. Emani Truluck was fifth in the event in 8.72 seconds.

In the 200, Truluck was a close second to Portland State's Malissa Anthony, running a personal-best 25.89 to Anthony's 25.84.

Patrick Kowalsky uncorked a throw of 58-0.25 on his third attempt in the shot put to easily beat his career best by nearly four feet to claim third place. His previous best was 54-1, and he had a heave of 52-8 last week at the Cherry & Silver Invitational.

Sofia Oberg posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the women's 800 meters, crossing the line in third place in 2:08.54. In the men's 800, Sebastian Sam also recorded an NCAA provisional time (1:50.38), taking seventh overall.

Mark Matusak ran the second-fastest 3000m in Cal history, taking third with an NCAA provisional time of 7:55.63. Steve Sodaro followed in 15th place in 8:06.93.

In the men's pole vault, Connor Landry tied for second by clearing 17-1.50, which gave him an NCAA provisional height. Justin Miller tied for sixth (16-7.50) and Ryan Shuler tied for eighth (16-1.75).

Miles Palacios improved his career best by just over two feet in the weight throw, with his mark of 60-5.25 bettering his previous PR of 58-4.50 set last weekend.

The Cal track & field team will take a week off before returning to Seattle for the Husky Classic on Saturday, Feb. 13.
