TWENTIETH ANNUAL EDITION : .
RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED TO !
WALTER W. BELL and VICTOR ERVING FRANCY :
WALTER W. BELL . .
"In the noble pursuit of making boys into men through
the manly processes of forthright athletic competition,
Walter W. Bell has achieved his mission. For 40 years he
has been an architect of life. The human.values he has
passed along to the several generations he has influenced
in the Long Beach City Schools system will reach out in all
directions. His contributions have helped make this a better
world — better made by the better men he has made,"
, . By Dick Zehms, Long Beach Independent-
Press-Telegram
VICTOR ERVING FRANCY
"Beloved and admired by the young men who have served
under him at Glendale, and Glendale Hoover High Schools
for 31 years, Victor Erving Francy retires as Track and
Field coach this year. His individual and team champions
have been many. His Hoover teams were four times Southern
California champions. The leadership which he has given,
and the inspiration which he has provided for young men
have resulted in the establishment of ideals at Glendale
Hoover High School which are unsurpassed in the nation
in prep school ranks, Victor Francy has spent his life
well — as a coach, and a builder of sturdy Americans."

HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION TWENTIETH ANNUAL TRACK AND FIELD RECORD BOOK 1956
1 This edition of Helms Athletic Foundation's Southern California High School
Track and Field Record Book, marks the 20th year that Paul H. Helms has
sponsored this project, in the interest of high school athletics. This
book lists the outstanding performances and records established by Southern California
track and field athletes during the 1956 season. Five hundred record books
are prepared and distributed by Helms Athletic Foundation each season.
The material recorded in this booklet has been gathered from sources which
are believed reliable. Information has been provided by high school coaches, sports
editors of student newspapers, as well as from Southern California newspapers.
This Southern California High School record book, as are all athletic
record books of similar nature, is prepared by Helms Athletic Foundation under the
supervision of W.R. Bill Schroeder, Managing Director. It is distributed without
charge to high schools, colleges, press, radio, television, athletic coaches and
officials.
Helms Athletic Foundation, with offices in Helms Hall, Los Angeles, is
sponsored by Paul H. Helms. The Foundation was established in 1936, with one of
its main purposes the recording of athletic achievements of athletes in all sports
and all divisions.
This 20th annual edition contains best marks of Los Angeles City and C.I.F.
track and field athletes over the past years, past C.I.F. and City championship
teams and present city, state and national interscholastic track and field marks.
There is also listed track and field athletes of the year, for both Los
Angeles and C.I.F. , selections which have been made by All-Southern California
Board of Athletics since 1937* These athletes have their names engraved upon the
Paul H. Helms trophy which is lodged in Helms Hall.
The Helms Athletic Foundation thanks Marty Zucker for his valuable and
most capable assistance in the preparation of this year's edition of its track
and field record book.
DAVE DAVIS AND BOB POYNTER NAMED AS TOP
CITY AND CIF TRACK ATHLETES OF YEAR, 1956
All-Southern California Board of Track and Field named a pair of record
breakers as 1956 Track and Field Athletes of the Year. Dave Davis of
Canoga Park High School, winner of the All-Los Angeles City shot put title, and
Bob Poynter of Pasadena High School, who won the C.I.F. Southern Section sprint
titles as well as the 220-yard state sprint championship, were the athletes named
for 1956 "player of the year" honors.
Dave Davis, Canoga Park High School's supreme shot putter, broke the Los
Angeles City meet record and the national interscholastic record in the shot put
on May 26, with a heave of 621 7 1/2". Coach C.P. Cromwell's ace athlete, was
outstanding in his event throughout the year, placing second in the California
State meet, with a put of 60' 5". Homer Robertson of Pacific High School, who won
the event, bested Davis1 week-old national mark with a monumental effort of 63'
9 1/2".
Bob Poynter, who led Pasadena's Bulldogs to the C.I.F. Southern Section
i crown with a double victory in the sprints, was unbeatable in Southern California
\. high school competition. Bob tied the C.I.F. Southern Section record of 9.6 in
j the 100-yard dash and set a new State meet standard in the 220-yard dash of 21
seconds flat. Poynter was coached during the 1956 track and field season by
Richard Simmons. Coach Simmons will receive a special Helms award for having
• coached the Bulldogs to the C.I.F. Southern Section title in 1956.
This marks the first year since the athlete of the year selections have
= been made that performers from either Canoga Park or Pasadena have been named for
;honors.
