RESPECTFULLY DEDICATED TO

W I L L I A M G. L O P E Z

It is with particular pleasure that Helms Athletic

Foundation dedicates this 1955 — Nineteenth Annual —

edition of the SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PREP SCHOOL TRACK &

FIELD RECORD to a treasured friend — WILLIAM G. LOPEZ. .

"Bill", beloved by all with whom he has worked for

ever so many years in connection with Los Angeles City

Schools athletic activities, is a true Californian —

having been born in Santa Barbara, having attended University

of Santa Clara, and University of California,

and having served as athletic coach in the Los Angeles .

City High Schools — 1920-1933 — as Lot; Angeles City

Schools athletic administrator — 1933-1955.

"Bill" has been a friend of high school athletes,

and he has been a champion of high school coaches.

There has been no one who has contributed more time and =

effort — far beyond the line of duty, in the interest

of high school athletes, and coaches, as well as high

school athletics, in general, than WILLIAM G. "BILL" \

LOPEZ. His "36 years of service to the Los Angeles City

Schools, in the field of athletics, have been most event-

| ful, and important.

HELMS ATHLETIC FOUNDATION NINETEENTH ANNUAL TRACK AND FIELD RECORD BOOK

X This marks the nineteenth year that Helms Athletic Foundation has prepared

and issued its Southern California High School Track and Field record book

in the interest of high school athletics. This edition lists outstanding

performances and records established by Southern California's high school track

and field athletes during the 1955 season. Five hundred record booklets are

prepared and distributed by the Helms Athletic Foundation each season.

The facts and records listed in this booklet have been gathered from sources

believed to be reliable. Information has been provided by high school coaches and

student newspaper sports editors, as well as from Southern California newspapers.

This Southern California Prep School Track and Field record book, as are all

athletic record books of similar nature, was prepared by Helms Athletic Foundation,

under the supervision of W.R. Bill Schroeder, Managing Director. It is distributed

to schools, press, radio, television, athletic coaches and officials, without

charge.

Helms Athletic Foundation, with offices in Helms Hall, Los Angeles, California,

is sponsored by Paul H. Helms. The Foundation was established in 1936. One of the

purposes of Helms Athletic Foundation is that of recording achievements of athletes

and athletic teams in all sports and all divisions.

This nineteenth annual track and field record book contains best marks of

Los Angeles City and C.I.F. Track and Field athletes over the past years, past

C.I.F. and City championship teams and present City, State and National Interscholastic

Track and Field records.

There is also listed the Track and Field athletes of the year, for both

Los Angeles City and C.I.F., selections which have been made by All-Southern

California Board of Athletics since 1937. These athletes have their names

engraved upon the Paul H. Helms Trophy, which is lodged in Helms Hall.
•~CHARLES DUMAS AND JESSE NEWMAN SELECTED

CIF AND CITY TRACK ATHLETES OF YEAR, 1955
X The Helms All-Southern California Board of Athletics selected a pair of

record breakers as 1955 Athletes of the Year in Track and Field. Charles

Dumas, Centennial High School, and Jesse Newman, Jefferson High School,

were the boys named for honors. Dumas was named the top performer from among all

Southern California C.I.F. high schools, while Jesse Newman was picked from the

ranks of Los Angeles City high schools.

Charles Dumas, Centennial High School senior, led an assault on the high

jump event all through the 1955 season. Dumas led his talented teammates to victories

in just about every invitational meet run in Southern California, posting

outstanding marks in his event. Centennial won the Bay League title, as well as

invitational meets at Chaffey, Santa Barbara and Inglewood, with Charles Dumas

breaking some sort of record every time out. He posted new C.I.F. marks in the

Southern Section championships (6' 8 7/8") and the California State Meet (6« 9 3/8")

and established a new all-time interscholastic best of 6' 10 1/4" at the SPAAU Meet,

Jesse Newman, Jefferson High School senior, broke a Los Angeles City

High School record which has been in the books since 1935. Newman, who helped

lead Jefferson High School to the Southern League title and second place in the

Los Angeles City championships, ran the mile in 4:23.9 fco gain the City title and

erase Louie Zamperini's mark of 4:26.3, made in 1935. Newman also clocked an

unofficial time of 4:22.0 in the California State Meet, running third to Newport

Harbor's Tod White, who set a new mark of 4:20.0.

Jesse Newman was coached by Estel Johnson, perennial top man in the

Southern League, while Charles Dumas received his instruction from Bill Gill, who

tutored his Apaches to victories in the C.I.F. and State meets.
