Collegiate Running Association Announces Inaugural 10K Road Race National Championships

RICHMOND, Va. - The Sports Backers and the Collegiate Running Association announced that the first-ever
Collegiate Running Association 10K Road Race National Championships will be held at the 2014 Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K presented by MARTIN'S on Saturday,
March 29.

"The Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K is thrilled to be host to the Collegiate Running Association 10K Road Race National Championships," said Bobby Ukrop, president and chief executive officer of Ukrop's Homestyle Foods, the event's title sponsor. "We think this is a great opportunity to add a unique championship event to what already is considered one of the top road races of any distance in the entire country."

The only requirement for those interested in competing in a Collegiate Running Association national championship- for road racing, trail racing or mountain racing- is that the participant must be currently enrolled in at least one college course at any level, freeing runners from various restrictions such as maintaining a full-time status and competing only during a four or five year window. These eligibility requirements provide the first opportunity for a true national championship that transcends college divisions to exist.

Running USA Turkey Trot Data Featured Nationwide

If you ran a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving Day, you were not alone - not by a longshot.

Thanksgiving has become the most popular holiday for road racing in the United States.

Data illustrating the trend, compiled by Running USA, was featured in USA today and in an infographic distributed nationally last week.

In 2011, there were 698,000 people trotting on Thanksgiving Day, whether for competition, camaraderie, or just to cut down a few of the calories they planned to consume later.

That far and away surpasses the number of people who raced on the Fourth of July - 248,000 - or in New Year's Day "Resolution Runs," which rang in at 81,000 in 2011.

In 2012, Thanksgiving Day race finishers had grown to 858,000, and 2013 could see 1 million Turkey Trot finishers! It will take some time for the final numbers to come in.

Meanwhile, check out the Running USA and MapMyFitness infographic on Turkey Trot data, and find the

USA Today front page snapshot here.
