USATF Athlete of the Week and News and Notes

Cuffe named Athlete of the Week
INDIANAPOLIS –Aisling Cuffe (Cornwall, N.Y.) has been named USA Track & Field’s Athlete of the Week after winning her second straight Foot Locker Northeast Regional cross country title Saturday at Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island.

The two-time USA Outdoor Junior 5,000m champion, Cuffe finished the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 51 seconds. With her win, Cuffe advances to the Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego on Dec. 12. She placed fourth (17:21) at the meet last year.

Now in its ninth year, USATF's Athlete of the Week program is designed to recognize outstanding performers at all levels of the sport. USATF names a new honoree each week and features the athlete on the USATF website. Selections are based on top performances and results from the previous week.

Annual Meeting begins tomorrow with Opening Session

The USATF Annual Meeting will kick-off with the traditional Opening Session at 5:00 p.m., on Thursday, December 2 in Ballrooms 2 & 3 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. Highlights include a report from USATF Chairman & President Stephanie Hightower.

Other highlights at the 2010 USATF Annual Meeting include the Annual Awards Breakfast, which will be held on Saturday, December 4 in Ballroom 2 & 3 at the Convention Center beginning at 8:00 a.m., and the Jesse Owens Awards and Hall of Fame Inductions Banquet that will take place on Saturday, December 4 beginning with a reception at 6:30 p.m. in Ballroom 2 & 3 at the Convention Center. The banquet will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Olympians to speak with students at Virginia Beach area elementary school

It will be USA Track & Field Sprirt Day at W.T. Cooke Elementary School in Virginia Beach, Va., on Thursday, December 2, as athletes in town for the USATF Annual Meeting visit the school in conjunction with Athletes for Hope.

2008 Olympic silver medalist Hyleas Fountain and 2009 World Outdoor silver medalist Lashinda Demus, as well as 2008 Olympians Mechelle Lewis and Erica Bartolina, will visit the school to speak to the children and conduct a fitness clinic in PE class.

Athletes for Hope is an organization that was created to educate, encourage and assist athletes in their efforts to contribute to community and charitable causes, and to inspire others to do the same.
