Over 15,000 Runners Share Insights, Decisions and Trends in Biennial Industry Report

WICHITA, Kan. - March 16, 2015 - Running USA, the national non-profit trade organization for running events and businesses, announced today the release of the 2015 National Runner Survey.

A biennial report, the National Runner Survey assesses the demographics, lifestyles, attitudes, habits, trends and product preferences of the running population nationwide. Results from the National Runner Survey reflect "core runners," that is, active adult participants who tend to enter running events and train year-round.

"The 2015 National Runner Survey is a resource for everyone in the industry to use," says Running USA CEO Rich Harshbarger. "It's a tool race directors, charities, brands and media can use to connect in a more meaningful way with the runners they wish to reach."

A few key findings in the 2015 National Runner Survey, include:
  • Today's core runners are highly educated and affluent, with 74.9% having earned a college degrees and 72.2% reporting a household income of more than $75,000.
  • Core runners are active participants who train year-round and log nearly 23 miles per week.
  • Technology continues to play an increasing role in training, with 57.6% carrying their cell phones and 52.1% carrying GPS devices with them on a regular basis while running.
"We're continuing to see a rapid rise in the influence of technology in running," says Harshbarger. "Whether that's cellphones being the most frequent item taken on runs, over 75% of respondents using social media to post race photos or online shoe purchases continuing to trend upward, technology is driving runners' decisions."

Running USA worked closely with more than 50 organizations to help distribute the online survey to various constituency groups from August through December last year. A total of 15,206 runners nationwide (62.4% female, 37.6% male) responded to the survey.
