Feb. 24, 2012

SEATTLE, Wash. - Cal's women's distance medley relay smashed the school record by more than 20 seconds in recording an NCAA automatic qualifying time and Linda Oseso broke the Golden Bear mark in the women's weight throw for the third time this season to highlight the opening night of the MPSF Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The quartet of Chelsea Reilly, Angelica Weaver, Sofia Oberg and Deborah Maier crossed the line in 10:56.29 in the DMR, which was well under the old Cal record of 11:19.93 from 2010. Though the Bears placed third behind Washington (10:55.01) and Oregon (10:55.78), the result secured the team's third berth to the NCAA Championships next month. Maier (5000m) and Reilly (3000m) have established NCAA qualifying times earlier this year.

Cal stood in second place through the first half of the DMR with Reilly opening with the 1200m and Weaver following for her 400m leg. In the 800m, Oberg took the lead and handed the baton to Maier for the final 1600m, but she was passed on the final lap. Still, the Bears' time ranks as the third fastest in NCAA indoor history on an oversized track and 10th fastest on any indoor track. In fact, the top four teams Friday earned NCAA automatic berths and the top five squads all broke the existing meet record.

In the hammer, Oseso surpassed the Cal record for the third time in four competitions this season with a throw of 63-0.25 on her final attempt. The mark, which was good for second place, topped her previous best effort of 62-4.00 from the Flotrack Husky Classic two weeks ago.

Jonte Grant and Taylor Kientzel went 3-4 in the men's long jump, both with PR efforts. Grant was less than five inches out of first place with his jump of 25-0.50, which came on his fifth attempt. The mark was nearly 11 inches further than his previous best. Kientzel, meanwhile, recorded a distance of 24-4.25, a one-foot improvement.

In the women's long jump, Malaina Payton tied for third with a PR 20-5.75, a mark that puts her tied for sixth on Cal's all-time performer list.

Derek While provided valuable points with a fourth-place finish in the men's weight throw with his mark of 61-9.00.

In the women's 60 meters, Carisma Lyday missed qualifying for the final by .01 when she was timed in a PR 7.59.

Idarre Coles set one PR and tied another on the first day of the heptathlon. He opened with a time of 7.24 seconds n the 60 meters to match his lifetime best, then set a PR with a height of 6-7 in the high jump. Through four of the seven events, he stands in 14th place with 2,802 points.

The meet, being held at the Dempsey Indoor Facility on the University of Washington campus, continues on Saturday, starting with the heptathlon 60-meter hurdles at 10:30 a.m. The final event is the women's 4x400m relay scheduled for 2:40 p.m.
