XTERRA to Honor Sally Meyerhoff at Trail Run World Championship

2011 Hawaii event to be run in memory of 2010 women's world champion; special "Sally" race bib

The 2011 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship on Sunday, December 4 will be run in memory of women's world champion Sally Meyerhoff.

More than 1,500 runners from around the world will participate in the event at Kualoa Ranch, Hawaii, and each runner will wear a special race bib with the name "Sally" in the background.

Meyerhoff won the women's division of the 2010 XTERRA Trail Run World Championship at Kualoa Ranch, setting a women's course record of 1 hour, 28 minutes, 58 seconds, over the 21K course.

Just three months after winning that race, Meyerhoff's life ended tragically on March 8, 2011. She was killed in a cycling accident in her hometown of Maricopa, Ariz. while training for the Ironman World Championship.

In addition to the special race bibs, Meyerhoff will be remembered during a moment of silence prior to this year's race at Kualoa Ranch.

Desilets, Cobb Crush Course Records 13.1 Fort Lauderdale

Event record of more than 2,900 runners at 4th edition; ten 5Kers beat the Karhu Bear

By Gary Ferman, US Road Sports

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - (Nov. 13, 2011) - Jordan Desilets and www.131marathon.co shattered course records Sunday in winning the 4th 13.1® Fort Lauderdale Marathon as a record 2,983 runners competed on a crisp 69-degree South Florida morning.

Desilets, from Pinckney, MI, crushed Pedro Gonzalez's 2009 time of 1 hour, 12 minutes, 40 seconds by more than three minutes, covering 13.1 miles in 1:09:34 despite facing a 12-15 mph headwind and 20mph gusts throughout the race. Cobb, a 28-year-old Indialantic, FL resident, knocked an even minute off Julia Mallon's 2009 1:21:12 record with a 1:20:12 clocking.

The prep race for the 2012 ING Miami Marathon and Half Marathon began in downtown Fort Lauderdale, winding its way past the galleries, shops and cafes of Las Olas Boulevard before heading east to A1A. The runners enjoyed a full sunrise before turning south and reaching the finish line at South Beach Park at the tip of A1A.

"At first you think it's a flat course, but then the tunnel and bridges get you," said Desilets, who was running in his first half-marathon. "But you get nice scenery and you never get sick of seeing the ocean."

Desilets wasn't entered in the half-marathon until learning about the race when company business brought him to South Florida this week. "I thought maybe I could get a course record and then I saw there was prize money," he said.

The 30-year-old has a lengthy resume of success at several distances. He won the 2010 Detroit Marathon, the 2004 NCAA national steeplechase title while at Eastern Michigan and finished in the top 10 in the steeplechase at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Trials.

"The wind was brutal at first," said Desilets, who pulled away from the pack at the 9-mile mark. "Especially when you are out by yourself and you have no one to hide behind. You were just pushing against it. When we did the turn-around there were two guys still clipping along. But I took off. I thought 'I don't want to lose this now.'"

Desilets finished more than three minutes ahead of runner-up Robert Wade, 29, of San Antonio, TX (1:12:58), while Jose Torres, 24, of Kissimmee took third place (1:13:14).

Calling the win her biggest in the half marathon, Cobb took the lead at the start of the 13.1-mile race. "I was just just trying to keep a six minute pace the whole way," she said.

The mother of a 20-month-old daughter and a former collegiate runner at Clayton State University in Georgia, Cobb is training for the January 15 Nassau-based Marathon Bahamas.

Behind Cobb in second place was 27-year-old Jane Vongvorachoti of New Hyde Park, NY (1:21:58) and 32-year-old Maria Morales of Wilton Manners, FL was third (1:24:54).

The 13.1 Fort Lauderdale is one of eight 13.1 marathons held across the country, and includes the "national championship" 13.1 Miami Beach scheduled for March 4, 2012.

"America's Half Marathon Series" is produced by US Road Sports & Entertainment of Florida, LLC.

"Our numbers have increased every year," said David Scott, General Manager for US Road Sports & Entertainment of Florida. "We have a nice following, and we continue to get great support from the City of Fort Lauderdale. It was exciting to have our course records broken today in the half marathon, and to have what might be our youngest 5K winner ever in our family of races."

Other notable finishers were:

*Luzviminde Viaamil, 54, of Long Beach, CA finished in 70th place in the female division, completing the final of eight half marathons in the 13.1 Series. She is the only woman to accomplish that feat this year.

*Palm Beach Gardens resident Joseph Kappel won the Karhu 5K, but his performance was overshadowed by 9-year-old Tsion Yared's stunning win in the female division. She was also the sixth overall finisher.

"It was really exciting," said the diminutive Yared, a fourth grader at St. Bonaventure School in Davie, FL who took off at the midpoint of the race, leaving her mother and two sisters behind. "Before the race I didn't really feel like I could win, but in the middle I saw that could. It was really cool smelling the ocean, and then running through the tape."

Kappel, a former high school cross country runner who didn't compete in college, entered the race to test a bothersome achilles as he trains for the Palm Beach Marathon, coming up December 4.

"I was getting a little nervous leading up to the (Palm Beach) Marathon," said the 39-year-old part-time adjunct professor who teaches chemistry at Palm Beach State College. "I wanted to get a race in but not overdo it."

Boca Raton's Caldeira Vundembar, 45, was second (19:11) behind Kappel and Miami's Matthew Rosenberg, 28, took third place (19:46). Yared finished 17 seconds ahead of 56-year-old Andrea Sanders-Reece of London (21:36) in the female division and Melissa Meyer, 40, of Coral Springs (22:04) was third.

*The Karhu 5K medalists were among the 10 runners to win free shoes in the race's "Beat the Karhu Bear" challenge. The "Karhu Bear" was Paul Marmaro on this morning, an accomplished runner who has trained for the Olympic Trials in four events.

"This was fun, but it was a lot harder in the costume," said Marmaro. "I was trying to run faster but I couldn't. It felt like 90 degrees when I was going out, and 110 degrees coming in. It was hard to breathe. The crowds chanting 'Go Bear' and 'Go Karhu' kept me in it. I probably lost five pounds in three miles."

Pick a Charity, Pick a Friend & Join the Honda LA Marathon 2012

"Charity 2-Person Marathon" makes its debut at 27th edition

LOS ANGELES - (November 2011) - For the first time in the race's history, the Honda LA Marathon is giving people a new way to experience 26.2 miles, in the form of a two-person relay. Runners will have the opportunity to join forces with a teammate to complete the full marathon distance, while raising money for one of the Honda LA Marathon's official charities supporting critical environmental, community and health-related causes.

Along with other participants in the 27th Honda LA Marathon on March 18, 2012, the first team member will begin at Dodger Stadium and continue through Chinatown, Little Tokyo, Echo Park and Silverlake, passing landmarks including the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Pantages Theatre and Grauman's Chinese Theatre. The second runner will pass by the Sunset Strip, run down Rodeo Drive, and then finish on Ocean Avenue, just a few steps from the Santa Monica Pier.

There are several hundred entries available for the 2012 Charity 2-Person Marathon, and the only way to participate is through registering with one of the Honda LA Marathon's official charities, found online at www.lamarathon.com/charities/2-person-marathon. The combined entry fee of $250 covers both members of the team, and fundraising minimums will depend on individual charity requirements.

"We are thrilled to launch the Charity 2-Person Marathon for the first time ever, offering a new way for runners to be a part of Marathon weekend," said LA MARATHON LLC Chief Operating Officer Nick Curl. "The Charity 2-Person Marathon will open the Honda LA Marathon to a wider group of people who want to be part of the festivities and raise money for some very important causes."

The inspiration for the Charity 2-Person Marathon came from Ben Fesagaiga, founder of Train 4 Autism, one of the Honda LA Marathon's official charities. Ben wanted to make the race more accessible to the general running community and enable charities to raise more money for important causes. He came to the Honda LA Marathon team with his pitch and it was enthusiastically received. Train 4 Autism brings together athletes committed to raising awareness and funds for autism research.

"My hope is that the creation of the Charity 2-Person Marathon will broaden the appeal of the Honda LA Marathon and show the running community across the country, and the world for that matter, what Los Angeles is all about," Fesagaiga said. "The LA I know and love is passionate about philanthropic causes, supporting charities, and putting others before themselves."

Participants in the Charity 2-Person Marathon benefit from the Honda LA Marathon's partnership with Crowdrise. Crowdrise, founded by actor and philanthropist Edward Norton, utilizes cutting-edge ideas about crowd sourcing and combines them with the power of social networking to create a fun and captivating environment for fundraising and volunteerism. Every runner will set up a fundraiser on the 2012 Honda LA Marathon page at www.crowdrise.com/hondaLAMarathon2012 so they can reach out to a network of friends, family members and colleagues in a matter of minutes. Even those who are not running can take part - by supporting a friend who is running, or by setting up a fundraising page of their own. Race officials say the goal is to make it easy for runners, volunteers and other passionate supporters to raise money for their favorite causes.

"For those who always dreamed of running right down the middle of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Sunset Strip and Rodeo Drive, but couldn't commit to training for and running the full 26.2 miles, this is a perfect opportunity to experience our world-class Stadium to the Sea course," Curl said. "We encourage runners to find a great teammate, contact one of our participating charities and make history with us in 2012."
