Mutai Crushes Course Record at ING New York City Marathon

Dado women's champion; more than 47,000 participants at 42nd edition under near perfect racing conditions; Emmanuel Mutai takes World Marathon Majors Series title and $500,000

By Duncan Larkin, Running USA wire

NEW YORK - (November 6, 2011) - Flashing a large smile and raising his hands towards the sky, Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya broke the tape at the 42nd ING New York City Marathon. Mutai's winning time was 2 hours, 5 minutes and 6 seconds and over two minutes faster than Tesfaye Jifar's ten-year-old course record and a pending U.S. All-Comers record. The fastest human ever to cover the 26.2-mile distance when he ran 2:03:02 to win this year's Boston Marathon, Mutai expressed his pleasure with his performance afterwards, but admitted that the race was hard-fought.

"The race was not easy. Although I won, it was not easy," he said. "The course was tough."

Mutai's victory virtually assures him a spot on the Kenyan team at next year's Olympics in London. He will most likely join world record holder Patrick Makau and two-time world champion Abel Kirui on the team.

Second place went to this year's Virgin London Marathon champion Emmanuel Mutai (no relation to Geoffrey) who finished in 2:06:28. Emmanuel's runner-up showing gave him the points needed to win the 2010-11 World Marathon Majors Series title and $500,000. Ethiopia's Tsegaye Kebede was third in 2:07:14.

The men's race was relatively uneventful until the 32K mark when the 30-year-old Geoffrey Mutai put down a surge that thinned the lead pack from seven runners down to four. In the mix at that point along with Geoffrey Mutai were Emmanuel Mutai, Kebede and defending ING New York City Marathon champion Gebre Gebremariam. But several minutes later, Geoffrey Mutai surged once again - a move that ended up proving to be the decisive moment of the race. For his victory, Mutai earned $200,000 and his winning time was also the fastest marathon run in November.

The women's race ended up unfolding in a completely different fashion.

From the start, Kenya's Mary Keitany, the current world record holder in the half-marathon, set a blistering pace. No other runners were able to stay with her. She passed through the half-marathon mark in a blazing 1:07:56, which was on track to break Paula Radcliffe's world record. At that point, the chase pack was comprised of five runners and included the race's eventual winner, Firehiwot Dado, and runner-up Buzunesh Deba - both from Ethiopia. However, Keitany was unable to maintain pace and began to slow as she reached Central Park's undulating terrain. Both Dado and Deba caught Keitany at the 40K mark. With the finish line in sight, the 27-year-old Dado put on the final surge to win the race and $170,000. She crossed the line in 2:23:15. Deba was second in 2:23:19, while Keitany took third in 2:23:38.

"I am very happy," said Dado, who has only one other marathon victory in her career. "I didn't expect the result...but I am happy." Dado admitted she had given up on Keitany. "Because she'd been running so fast from the very beginning, I didn't imagine that we'd catch her."

The top U.S. female was 23-year-old Molly Pritz who came in 12th overall (2:31:52), while 2009 ING New York City Marathon champion and 2004 Olympic silver medalist Meb Keflezighi (San Diego HS, UCLA)was the first American on the men's side. The 36-year-old Keflezighi took sixth in 2:09:13, a personal record by two seconds.

More than 47,000 runners took part in the 26.2-mile race on Sunday that winds through all of New York City's famed five boroughs. With temperatures of 45 degrees Fahrenheit at the start and calm winds, conditions were near perfect.

Eugene Marathon, BazuSports Partner for New Runner Experience

2012 event to offer race tracking and social media tools

EUGENE, Ore. - (November 2, 2011) - Ever wish you could let your family or friends waiting at the Hayward Field finish area know how you were doing somewhere along the Eugene Marathon and Half-Marathon courses?

Wish no more.

Runners will be able to have their split times and course location broadcast live through text, Facebook and Twitter when the annual event is held next April.

The racecasting service, developed by BazuSports of Davis, Calif. allows marathoners and half-marathoners to designate how their split times should be broadcast in real time and to whom.

"It'll be great for spectators and for racers," says Richard Maher, race director of the Eugene Marathon and Expo, which will be held for the sixth time April 27-29, 2012.

"Spectators will be able to easily learn the location of runners and their split times, and to track their progress. They won't have to guess about when they'll finish. And those living many miles away will be able to do the same."

"In its first five years, the Eugene Marathon has quickly become recognized as one of the top new marathons in the country," says Paul Itoi, chief executive officer of BazuSports. "We are excited to partner with them to continue delivering an excellent running experience."

In addition to the tracking service, BazuSports will provide easy-to-use kiosks at the Expo for athletes to register and to check-in. Participants also can choose to post an official Eugene Marathon Finisher badge on their Facebook wall upon completion of the race. Photos and videos will be posted on BazuSports' results platform.

The company also has developed tools that will allow Eugene race organizers to reward athletes who drive Facebook friends to register for the marathon and half-marathon.

"It's something we haven't had before," Maher says of the full range of BazuSports' services. "It'll make registration go smoother and make results easier to obtain. Plus, we have the social networking part."

BazuSports unveiled its platform earlier this year. It has since provided race tracking to the Hartford Marathon and the Zazzle Bay to Breakers 12K.

The 6th Eugene Marathon and Half-Marathon will be run on Sunday, April 29, 2012. The races, which conclude in historic Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus, have grown from 4,000 athletes the first year to about 8,500 in 2011. This year, runners came from 49 states and eight countries.

Other events include the Health and Fitness Expo at the Eugene Hilton and Conference Center on Friday, April 27, and Saturday, April 28; and the kids' run and 5K for adults on Saturday, April 28. Proceeds benefit more than 50 local charities, teams and partners.

Brooks New PureConnect Captures Runner's World Best Debut Award

Recently launched lightweight style honored, while new Adrenaline GTS 12 available now at retail

BOTHELL, Wash. - (Nov. 3, 2011) - Brooks PureConnect, the new, ultra-lightweight, flexible running shoe by Brooks Sports, was awarded "Best Debut" by the worldwide authority on running, Runner's World. In the magazine's December Winter Shoe Guide, the PureConnect is praised for its lightweight feel and snug fit.

"This new shoe strikes a balance between barefoot-inspired minimalism and cushioning-required training," stated the Runner's World review of the PureConnect. "It has a lightweight, barely there feel yet is substantive enough to handle long tempo runs."

One of four shoes in the Brooks PureProject collection, PureConnect puts as little as necessary between the runner and the ground. It features a fusion of lightweight materials and innovative technologies including an extended Toe Flex for incredible flexibility, a Nav Band for a close-to-the-foot fit, and an IDEAL Heel that aligns the runners center of gravity for optimal spring with every step. Now runners can connect with the ground and activate new muscles with every stride.

"We are so ecstatic to receive such great recognition for the PureConnect from Runner's World," said Andre Kriwet, global director of footwear product management for Brooks. "Runners were telling us that they craved a feel the road, hug the corners ride in a shoe that was ready for training right out of the box. This award from Runner's World and the amazing feedback we are receiving from runners, prove we delivered this with the PureProject collection."

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 12 was also reviewed by Runner's World. It was one of six stability shoes included in the Winter Shoe Guide and is the newest update of the brand's best seller. Featuring the same revered fit and feel as previous version, the Adrenaline GTS 12 now includes more mesh for breathability, a friction-resistance heel and a caterpillar crash pad that encompasses more strides.

One wear tester stated the shoe had "a very comfortable upper with great heel and forefoot cushioning," while another said, "It performed well on both the road and the track."

The Adrenaline GTS 12 is available now at retailers globally and on BrooksRunning.com. The Adrenaline GTS style is one of the best selling shoes for Brooks, evidenced by the Adrenaline GTS 11 experiencing a 25% global increase in units sold YTD.

The suggested retail price of the PureConnect and Adrenaline GTS 12 are $90 and $110, respectively. For more technical information about the PureConnect, Adrenaline GTS 12, and all Brooks performance running shoes, apparel and accessories, go to: BrooksRunning.com
