Team USA wins nine medals at World University Games

Team USA concluded competition in the 2011 World University Games (WUG) Sunday in Shenzen, China. When the track and field portion came to a close, Team USA finished in a tie for the third-most medals won over the six days of competition.

In a tie with Jamaica, Turkey, Ukraine and Japan, Team USA racked up a total of nine medals, which included three gold. They also won three silver and three bronze medals. Russia won the most overall track and field medals with 31.

Team USA was able to pick up gold medals from Brigetta Barrett in the high jump with a personal best jump (1.96m/6-5), Jeshua Anderson (Taft HS, Woodland Hills, CA 2007; WSU 2011)in the 400m hurdles (49.03 seconds) and Nia Ali (West Catholic HS, Philadelphia 2005; Pleasantville HS, NJ 2006; Tennessee 2007; USC 2011)in the 100m hurdles (12.85).

Winning silver for Team USA included: Marquise Goodwin in the long jump (8.03m/26-4.25); Tiffany Townsend in the 200m (22.96) and the women’s 4x100m relay squad of Lakya Brookins, Shayla Mahan, Christina Manning and Townsend (43.48).

Winning bronze for Team USA included: Mason Finley in the shot put (19.72m/64-8.5); Christina Manning in the 100m hurdles (13.17) and Ronald Brookins (Helix HS 2007; Sacramento State 2011) in the 110m hurdles (13.24).

Team USA was composed of 10 men and 10 women between the ages of 17 and 27, who have completed at least one three-credit course toward a degree or diploma within the last year and have met the qualifying standard in their respective event. Four of the athletes who competed in the WUG – Goodwin, Anderson, Barrett and Erik Kynard (high jump) – will also compete in the 2011 World Outdoor Track & Field Championships August 27-September 4 in Daegu, South Korea.
