NEW ORLEANS – BYU’s Miles Batty, Washington’s Scott Roth, Stanford’s Amaechi Morton, and Virginia Tech’s Alexander Ziegler were named on Wednesday as Scholar Athletes of the Year in Division I for the 2011 men’s track & field seasons by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The group represents collegiate track & field’s best in both athletics and academics. In addition, 420 student-athletes were tapped as USTFCCCA All-Academic honorees.
Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards are determined from among those who earned All-Academic status and placed highest in individual events at the most recent NCAA Championships. Those who earn multiple individual championship titles rank higher in the tie-breaking process, and cumulative GPA is weighed as the final tiebreaker to establish a winner. Separate awards are given to track athletes and field athletes for the indoor and outdoor seasons, resulting in four categories.
Indoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year –
Miles Batty, BYU
Batty, a senior from Sandy, Utah, was the NCAA indoor champion in the mile run (3:59.49) and led the Cougars to a national championship in the distance medley relay as anchor. Batty accumulated a 3.95 cumulative GPA in neuroscience and exercise science while an undergrad at BYU. Batty was also named the USTFCCCA National Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the nation’s coaches earlier in the year.
Indoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year –
Scott Roth, Washington
Roth, a senior from Granite Bay, CA., swept NCAA pole vault titles in 2011. At the indoor national championships, Roth cleared 18-½ (5.50m) for the victory. Roth tallied a 3.35 cumulative GPA while a major in biology at Washington.
Outdoor Track Scholar Athlete of the Year –
Amaechi Morton, Stanford
Morton, a junior from Atlanta, Ga., was the nation’s runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA outdoor championships. Morton has a 3.30 cumulative GPA through the 2011 spring term and is majoring in science technology at Stanford.
Outdoor Field Scholar Athlete of the Year –
Alexander Ziegler, Virginia Tech
Ziegler, a junior from Dischingen, Germany, won the NCAA crown with the hammer throw, tossing a championships-best 238-6 (72.69m). Ziegler holds a 3.42 cumulative GPA as a management major at Virginia Tech.

420 Earn All-Academic Status
In addition to the Scholar Athletes of the Year, the USTFCCCA also announced the men’s 2011 Division I All-Academic Track & Field team. A total of 420 student-athletes representing 153 institutions compose the group. Minnesota and Nebraska led the country with 12 All-Academic nods apiece while Stanford and BYU was third and fourth in the nation, respectively, with 11 and 10 honorees.
The Big 12 Conference led all leagues with 45 earning All-Academic honors, followed by the Big Ten and Pac-10 each receiving 41.
NCAA indoor 3000-meter champion Elliott Heath of Stanford joined Batty, Roth, and Ziegler as national champions that earned All-Academic honors.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
The women’s All-Academic individual honorees will be named tomorrow. Those institutions given All-Academic Team status will be named on Wednesday, August 10 (men) and Thursday, August 11 (women).
